I went this exact route too, except I mounted mine above the passenger airbag on/off switch

MobArmor mount on shifter bezel. Pricey but it's sturdy and well built. I don't keep mine on the dash because honestly there's no way even on the dash you can look at the phone and focus on the road at the same time, just ain't happening.

I can't take phone off the mount very easily if I need to while driving.

I started out with a ProClip and loved it cause it held sturdy and kept the phone charged. BUT, it was mounted to the right of the shifter and required me to look so far to my right that it took my vision completely away from the road.

I then went to the AirDock, which seemed so promising, initially, and then turned to shit as I had to replace the charging case three times within a year due to the small charging cable that goes between the case and the phone "creasing," and tearing. It's advantage was that it mounted in the CD slot and enabled me to have at least a peripheral view of the road when I glanced at the phone.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck with the AirDock for now as I continue to search for something that enables me to mount my phone in a location to the right of my steering wheel and retain my peripheral view, while keeping the phone charged.

@voz I have a holder that might work for you. The base sits in the cup holder and is expandable so it can be made tight. The holder attaches to the base via suction cup. Works great. Bought 2 of these and my wife never uses this one. Been kicking around my shop a while. If you're interested it's yours for the cost to ship.will upload a pic shortly.

This is the scosche magic mount. It disappears visually when the phone is on it. Best part is that you add a slim piece of steel to your phone instead of a magnet.

I use a BirdDawg Industries Mirror Riser, RAM ball, RAM short arm, and a standard RAM X-Grip. Works great. The standard X-Grip fits my iPhone 6 plus perfectly. I keep it in a Magpul field case. An Otterbox would require the XL version.

I couldn't figure out how to repost the thread but #24 is the one that I use on my 2012 and mounted a wireless charger for my S7. Pretty good location and doesn't really block anything but can get in the way a little bit for your passenger. The wireless charger barely charges the phone but it will stop it from discharging as I use it for Waze and music most of the time. It's really nice not to have to mess with wires every time you get in and out.
