I will be Towing a 6x10 trailer with a Goldwing trike on it. I have an 02 SR5 preruner double cab. I will stay out of overdrive, & that puts my RPM at 60 MPH at 3000. Can the engine withstand a constant RPM of 3200. That would allow me to run 70 MPH. I will be going about 600 miles.

    Thanks for all replies.

Being that it's only half of the total RPM limitations of the engine I would say yes.

Gas mileage is obviously going to suffer and I wouldn't push the engine in short burst. Rather allow it to get to 3200 and then sustain.

Slow down a bit and run at 60, your wallet will thank you. However, 3200 RPM isn't going to kill your engine though it will work your idler pulley bearings and ancillaries a bit harder then normal.

From other posts on this thread that I have read you're engine won't be bothered at all by that. There have been those here that have run theirs at much higher rpm for longer. As a matter of fact I did a 1300 mile round trip in mine a few months ago and was running 75 or 80 mph the whole time which is right at 3000 for 80 mph and I never noticed anything change. I had over 700 lbs in the bed as well. My fuel mileage even stayed right where it normally is. Around 20 mpg.

DO NOT keep it out of overdrive, unless it "hunts" between gears. If it stays happily in overdrive, LET IT. If you get into any spot where it starts shifting frequently in and out of overdrive, THEN downshift, and only for the duration of the problem, then let it have overdrive again.

What this guy says. Only lock it out of overdrive when and if it's hunting for gears.

In years past I've ran high RPM for extended periods of time. Over an hour at 3800 RPM with occasional bursts of throttle pushing past 4500 RPM and 4200 RPM for 30 minutes constant. Keep an eye on temp, vacuum and oil pressure. Granted all that could contribute to my oil consumption but the engine is still alive.

Keep the overdrive on. Like said above, if it starts gear hunting, then turn it off. I used to tow a 17' bass boat with a 99 Prerunner v6. On the highway I kept overdrive on

Depending on the transmission programming overdrive is negligible as long as the converter clutch is locked everything is fine. Not sure if the 02 transmission locks the converter when overdrive is disengaged. Now because your a prerunner I wouldn't worry too much. The the final drive ratio is pretty high and that small trailer should haul fairly well with or without overdrive. Have a safe trip.

A340E trans does lock the torque converter in overdrive but it also locks it with OD off. OD in that trans is the 4th gear, so with it off it'll lock the converter in 3rd gear

I have a 2TR-FE and I wouldn't hesitate and I wouldn't hesitate with your 3RZ-FE either. Personally I believe Toyota designed these 4 bangers to withstand high RPM for extended periods of time. They see very demanding commercial use throughout the world. The 2TR-FE is rated to tow 5,500 lbs in the Hilux which we all know isn't possible without revving the shit out of it the entire time. Keep up on your oil changes.

... this depends on several things.
    1. Is the truck equipped with the OEM tow package
    2. Is truck equipped with the ECT button
    3. Current gear ratio

I say this because the A340E & F trans do not like excessive heat, nor does the converter. I smoked both is how I know.

If the tow package is there and gear ratio is proper, leave in OD, manually disengaging when needed.
Turn off the ECT button so you won't have the later shifts at higher RPM's putting stress on multiple components, ie: u-joints, carrier bearing etc...
If you have 4.56's or lower (a higher number), that will be better for your trans.

    Just my .02.

My transmission sees 190 degrees just driving around and has been like that since I bought it. If he has the tow package his temps will be lower by 20 degrees or so.
The converter on the A340E/F will be in lock-up in overdrive so you won't create additional heat. Dropping to 3rd manually on a 2nd gen will still lock the converter while in 3rd. I am not sure if a 1st Gen truck will do the exact same when you disengage overdrive.
He should be fine running down the road at 3000 RPM.
