If I recall correctly, most of the 1st gens have a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. I'd love to get a boat, but I don't know if my taco can handle it.

What have you towed with your 1st gen?

    Cool.

2nd Gen Forum has one, but I didn't find one in the 1st Gen Forum either. Might be because it is not a truck designed for serious towing.

Oh yeah that's why it's so interesting. You can't tow much with a 3,500 pound weight limit so it's kind of fascinating what people manage to tow.

Max ive pulled was a 10500 camper trailer for a friend that needed to have it moved for a storm or it would have been lost.... not sure how but the little taco pulled it up a muddy hill and down the road about a mile! Ive also towed a 26ft bow rider boat with no issue and a 16ft carolina skiff again with no issue....not much these little trucks cant do IMO

To the OP, I towed a 12 ft trailer from Tulsa, OK to Lakewood, CO. My dear mother was driving the truck, while I drove the Miata. We encounter 80 MPH winds while driving through Kansas, it was "interesting"... Oh yeah, I turned on the overdrive after I returned the Uhaul trailer.

Ive towed my dads 9000lb bayliner 285 around town (gingerly and very slowly)before when his 2500 chev blew a coolant hose. It was obviously more than it could handle safely even with beefed up suspension and trailer brake controller.

I tow a 20' pontoon with no problems. By far the heaviest i Towed was a double cab I bought. The uhaul trailer was almost as heavy as my pontoon. When I got the truck on, I had to start out in 4 high to get the damn thing rolling then pop it back into 2 high. Towed it home at an average speed of 65 with my little four banger.

I towed my E30 on a dolly with no problems this past weekend. In the past I've towed E30 and E36 BMWs on dollys and Uhaul trailers. This is with a beefed up suspension, Tundra brakes and the supercharger. Towing with the stock truck was always a little nerve wracking.

There is Towing then there is moving something from point A to B

My Tacoma is fine for dragging around 2000 pound welders with a few hundred pounds in the bed.

If your planning to drag a boat to the water when ever the weather and urge for water strike I think something a little bigger is in order .

It really Comes down to being able to stop

For serious Towing I use the Ford F250 7.3

I can honestly say....that since I bought my truck brand new in late 2001.....that I have never towed a single thing.

I fail to see how 4HI was any benefit to getting started. Curious to hear how.

OP, my 97 Taco v6 I towed "more" than 5000# regularly and never felt uncomfortable. Heaviest was a load of riprap/brick that I towed out to our hunting club to fill in a water crossing. Felt heavy so I stopped by the scale to check and it was 7500#. After that load I didn't put so much on the trailer.

Some people are uncomfortable if they can't accelerate along with the Chevy Impala next to them...which means nothing AFA Im concerned. Its all about your braking ability and stability. Braking ability means you HAD BETTER have trailer brakes. Stability means proper tongue weight and load distribution.

    3500#? easy peazy.

Towed this to a lake an hour away almost every weekend this summer. Fifth gear and above 70 mph didn't exist but towed really well.
Give yourself plenty of room to stop though or do the tundra brake upgrade.
Also, weighed everything and with full tanks on both, the truck weighed 4k lbs with two 150 lb people and the boat weighs 2800 lbs
Boat has a 140 mercruiser in it

Winnebago's largest bumper pull weigh 4880lb dry. And MAX GVWR is 7k. See here: https://winnebagoind.com/products/towables/2015/minnie/floorplans Your buddy is telling you lies, and you're perpetuating them.

Seriously if a 10k load is properly distributed on the hitch, you could bend the rear of your frame right down to the ground because it's not boxed. Or you'd overheat your trans within miles unless you're in 4low. Or you'd burn up your wheel bearings, axle bearings, etc etc because DON'T DO IT.

What's the largest boat you can tow with a 2.7l 3RZ-FE? Most of y'all have a v6 which gives you a lot more options and about 2,000 more pounds of towing capacity.
