Yeah, it would be higher except apparently using the air conditioning really kicks your mileage in the dick. I saw a drop over the summer & now it's popped right back up when I use the AC less.

Also I do have mods like the LCE header, a 1.5" lift, and heavier AT tires. Net effect on mileage looks like it chipped me down a bit.

No one is making a paper filter for the v6. You have to buy from Toyota and it's around 30 bucks...

As I mentioned, I have looked at the set ups guys installed on their Hilux. Most by them for looks. The technology in air boxes is excellent now. Even if you were on a dusty road in AZ it doesn't reduce dust in.

I say buy up to a quality K&N filter that's reusable. You can keep that ugly black thing off the side of your truck and avoid drilling a hole in your fender.

Installed mine today. No noise on the highway and as far as the "improved" sealing people are talking about with the new air boxes, I disagree. One day in Moab and had to stop 3 times to reset MAF sensor code due to dust, with K&N.

That's because you were running an inferior K&N filter. Go back to stock and that won't happen.

Hmmm. That seems odd. So you are telling us that the snorkel decreases the amount of dust going into the air cleaner. Just how is that happening? Being up higher does nothing for it. In fact its wide open. I might agree if you turned the intake port up by the cab backwards being then its away from direct face of dust and dirt but I have heard when you do that it creates an issue with air intake as the air is significantly disrupted.

Now I have to be honest, I never looked that closely at my 2014 Tacoma air box other then it was sealed tight. My Hilux here in Thailand is well sealed and there is no way a "Snorkel" bolt on is going to improve on that. I still say they are a gimmick and bolted on for that "Cool" factor versus being truly practical. There is nothing on any site that talks about the performance benefits and for $500+ I'd rather add a chip for more power. But that's me.

As for K&N filters, They can be problematic in heavy dust areas as they clog up if you are using the oil treated units. I noted some issues with mine when I did some Baja stuff in Mexico. But the bigger problem in sand and heavy dust isn't the air cleaner, its protecting the radiator from being plugged from the vehicles in front of you tossing up the dust.

    Hmmmmmm....

Looks somewhere between ugly and hideous, can't decide.

It looks far bigger than necessary for the air requirements of a 3.5 V6.

And I wonder why a 3" inlet at the top of the snorkel requires the body to expand out to what seems like nearly a foot at the fender.

Maybe some high tech air expansion technology?

Or maybe more likely disrupting the airflow significantly?

It is ARB and not one of the cheapo intake brands, so they likely did actually do some testing before releasing it. And there may be airflow guides inside there and not just a hollow misshapen tube.

Still, I see potential MAF codes with this.

You don't believe that moving the intake further away from the ground provides an improvement in air quality? Heavier particles will stay closer to the ground, More particles will stay closer to the ground, tires will kick up the most dirt closer to the ground...... Generally everything drops to the ground because of gravity right?

I'm on the fence about this. It's ugly as corn infested crap but I would like to do water crossings and a snorkel would be nice to prevent water inhalation. I live in the midwest so dust isn't really a problem for me. We mostly have rock and more rock... and clay.

you like the look of a snorkel, or the look of THIS snorkel?

If its the former, no disagreement with you there. If you like this snorkel, then all I can say is to each their own. . .

Putting it up high does a massive amount to cut down on the dust. The stock box draws air from the fender gap above the wheel well. The air in the fender is churned up with whatever the tires are kicking up whereas the snorkel isn't seeing any dust at all, at least from the vehicle it's attached to.

Isn't that what the fender liner is for?

EDIT. That video is a horrible comparison. He even admits that the vehicle without the snorkel was trailing almost the entire time.

Yes, I like the look of A snorkel and THIS snorkel. I think the lines work very well with the body style of the 3rd gen. Just my humble opinion.

No argument on the law of physics but lets be realistic, look at the air box location in your truck. None of them face forward and most have a low point in them to catch "Heavy" particles as you mentioned. I guess maybe if you were tailgating someone out in a dusty environment it could possibly have a slight improvement but how many are really tailgating and how many are going that fast where they need one.
