The 95-97 Taco Thread

I heard the deflector rubs the paint off the front of the hood

 

Thr one i had didn't. It mounted under the hood and didn't touch the paint. Took it off because theyre ugly imo though.

 

I took mine off but I'd be happy to pass it along if your interested

My dad and stepmom suggested a bug deflector, but I don't really like the pics I have seen of them on this truck. Some cars look ok with them.

They both have nice ones on their cars (Titan and Murano) which have clear little bump stops on the hood to keep the tips from bending back and touching the paint. Other than that they mount under the front edge of the hood.

I'm thinking of just buying a strip of 3M clear bra material from Amazon once I get the spots touched up, that way the hood stays protected and I get to keep the clean front of the first gen.

 

The clear bra works well for sure, but make sure your surface prep is on point. You need a clean room basically to apply it without it looking shitty. My truck is a dumpster fire anyway, so I haven't bothered applying it to mine but another good place to put it would be the little area before the rear wheel (you get lots of chips there)

Oh bug deflectors. My grandpa put one on the pickup before I got. Never bothered to take it off. Doesn't "rub" the paint at all.

I have a theory about the paint chipping on mine though. There's a line of paint chipping up that's all exactly the same distance from the big deflector. Now the paint is old and cracking anyway, but my theory is that the air rushing over it drops down immediately after and has extra pressure to pick those chips off. Like water behind a rock in a river I think the air is making a "back-etty" and pulling up flakes.

Does that seem reasonable since all the chips are in a line parallel to the deflectors top edge?

Yeah my grandfather wasn't worried about keeping it clean and taking care of the paint. You can see little cracks in the paint over the whole hood. But none of it is chipped except right behind the deflector. Oh well. Some day I'll paint it. Some day....

My 1996 3.4l 5 speed with 284k.

 

Mine went 296k before the original 3.4 let go. A junkyard motor with 135k went in and now the truck has 320k.

 

I just tried to buy a truck almost exactly like your's for $1000 with a bad 2.7 in it, but the kid had a trade in the works for a motorcycle already.

Sorry you missed out. I hade a 95 2.7L, standard cab- same color, that I had to sell to go to college. When I saw this one I had to buy it.
