    Sloppy AUTOMATIC Shifter Fix

Truck shifter now shifts and feels like new.

    Reference post I used: http://www.yotatech.com/f2/sloppy-automatic-shifter-161958/

Order (4) new shifter bushings from Toyota item# 33501G in the diagram below. (2 on top pivot / 2 on bottom pivot)
Remove the transfercase shifter knob. (Unscrew counter clockwise)
Remove the plastic shifter trim surround. (4 phillips head screws)
Unplug shift wire harness topside. (Depress catch on the bottom of the plug)
Unbolt shift linkage from shifter arm under truck ((1) 12 mm nut)

Remove entire shifter assembly and take to work bench for clean up / overhaul repair.

Gently press out steel inserts from shifter assy hold down bolt holes. Once inserts are removed you can press the rubber boot and cover through the shifter frame and remove the rubber boots from the bottom. Once removed soak rubber in hot water and clean in strong detergent (Dish sopa works well as doest purple power or Spray 9)

Remove plastic shift indicator housing (3 phillips head screws)
Remove WHITE Plastic safety switch housing (3 smaller Phillips head screws)

You know have the clearance necessary to remove the top shifter bolt. Remove bolt / clean shifter bore / install new bushings / maybe apply a light grease or oil if you choose ~ Some think oil or grease may break down the bushings, but it looks like white lithium may have been used stock. (Nuts on both shafts are 13mm)

Slipping shaft with new bushings back into place is a snug fit. Take care not to tear the new bushings.

Next remove pin and clean shaft bore in bottom forward shifter pivot. Carefully install new bushings and tighten pivot bolt back down. I went full tight and then backed off 1/4 turn. Lock washer seems to hold the nut firm and much tighter would trash the new bushings.

Clean associated parts as desired ~ My T-case shifter boot may have been used as a mud jug (sure looked that way)

    Reassemble revers of disassemble.

My top shifter bolt / pin had been wrapped in electrical tape by previous owner to improvise bushing

replacement. Bottom bolt was sloppy ~ loosey goosey.

I wish I'd have taken more pictures of the procedure and shifter, BUT I did not sorry. Took me about 1.5 hrs. and half of that time was cleaning the shifter / shifter boot and plactic surround in the kitchen sink.
