Ok, Im currently have a first gen taco and a VW TDi. Im thinking of taking the buyback offered through VW and getting a 4x4 crew cab taco. My question is why are there (at least in my area) so many Tacos already being traded in with 10k and less miles? Is there a problem outside of the trans shifting that can be fixed that would stop someone from wanting to keep it? Just wondering before I buy a new or used one for that matter.

The 2016's have had different problems....I believe the two biggest issues being complained about is the transmission shifting issue and the "not enough engine power" complaint. There are of course other problems that have resulted in Toyota buying the trucks back from the individual through lemon laws and such but those cases are not very common. I have heard issues of some of the 2016's leaking water in the cab due to bad seals, squishy spots on the steering wheels, Entune audio system software issues, blah blah blah.

Even when all this I still bought my 2016 TRD OR 4x4 3 months ago and I love mine. Not the first complaint from me on the truck.

I will say...I drove 3 Tacomas...2 of them were 2017 TRD Sports and then my 2016 OR...all 3 trucks drove and acted differently. My 2016 felt the strongest and drove just like the 2015 I traded in.

Take your time...test drive several even if they are brand new because not all are created equal. I would recommend you test driving a 2nd gen first to see the "tried and tested" 4.0 setup...then drive some 3rd gens.

If anything comes up with mine...am I concerned??? Nope. Because that's what warranties are for. It's brand new...they will take care of it.

If you buy used...buy an extended warranty for it.

Good luck OP, I say go for it! I loved my 2015 but it was a Prerunner 4x2 and The interior was dated. I love the interior and looks of the 3rd gen. Lots of technology and appearance upgrades.

    Enjoy!

People have their own expectations when it comes to Tacoma. And when they are not happy with it they start to belive its junk. It's like that with Alot of people on here and even not on here. I have had mine for almost a year had just a few small issues that were fixed under warranty and yes a small few have had major issues. Some of those might have been demos or even maybe daily rentals. Also for some it just didn't meet their needs and needed something else. But Tacomas are nice and I love mine. Best of luck on your decision .

If I had a flux capacitor and could hit 88mph I would stop myself from buying mine. I test drove it too. They are not for everyone. I will say the only legitimate problem was the tranny. Dealer refuses to check fluid but did the tsb.

Biggest complaint to date is the ect not staying on like my 99 4Runner would. Drives so much better with the ect on.

    Rant over.

I think this is right. People are great about building stuff up in their mind, and then when it doesn't meet the unrealistic expectations, they gotta sell and move on.

Not just your area, here in Atlanta area too.

Within 25 miles of my zip, a couple dozen 2016's with only a few thousand miles for sale, and most at dealerships other than Toyota.

With the small differential in price, I would not even consider one of the "lightly used" trucks unless it was equipped exactly like I wanted and came with a great warranty thrown in.

Remember, if the dealer or Toyota buys back a Lemon truck and does NOT go through the Lemon law, they don't have to market it as a Lemon buyback.

You don't see hardly any low mileage 2017's, whether that's due to them just being newer or Toyota getting a handle on some of the common issues is unknown.

Based on the fewer 2017 complaints (though there are obviously fewer 2017's) on here, I suspect QC is improving.

You're not seeing 17s as much yet since they've only been manufactured for approximately the last 2-3 months. A certified used Toyota comes with a better than standard warranty, 7year/100k, just something to consider.

There are too many possibilities to accurately say why these trucks are being sold used with around 10k on them. Could just be that like a lot of people that after one year they just got tired of the same vehicle already, or perhaps they didn't really need a truck (very common now since truck seem to be very popular). Could be the fuel economy isn't good enough. Could be lots of things. I will assume that most of those trucks on the used market are from people who aren't on this forum, and might never have even heard of the "standard" issues mentioned here.

If you can find one used for a decent mark down, with a certified warranty and your trying to save money, then consider buying used. Otherwise brand new will probably only cost a little more and would be worth it if you have any doubts about its history. Also, have the dealer pull its service history if you're concerned as well.

I bought a used '16 back in March; it had been a November sale from the same dealership and the salesman told me the buyers decided they "needed" a Tundra. In the end I think it was a good value ... I saved a few $K, got a color-matched ARE shell and Toyota Certified Pre-owned warranty which in some ways is better than new warranty. And, I sold off a few of the other add-ons that I didn't want for a few hundred bucks. In my opinion it was a better deal than the similar prices being asked for '14's and '15's with 20K more miles. My only regret is that if I had bought new, I might have got an MT.

I have a 2016. It is a good truck overall and very nice offroad. However, if I knew what I knew now after owning the truck for 7 months I wouldn't buy it again. I've come to the conclusion it really isn't worth the money to me.

I have two major complaints with the truck that Toyota has told me they aren't going to fix (there are quite a few minor annoyances as well that I am baffled made it onto a new truck). They gave me a complimentary 125k mile warranty for the issues, but the annoyance of them is starting to outweigh that for me. The steering wheel has a high frequency vibration at 2100-2400 RPM unlike any other vehicle I've been in (except for one with completely shot engine mounts). I've had one differential replaced for howling (loud enough to hear over the radio) and now the second one howls just as loud. As I've said toyota has looked at both issues and said they aren't going to pursue fixing them any further.

If it wasn't for the complimentary 125k mile warranty mine would be one of the low mileage ones you see on the lot. Another saving grace is the manual transmission but the power band is embarrassing at lower RPMs. It is almost dangerous, there is zero response for a good couple of seconds if you pull out into traffic and happen to be at around, say 1500 RPM and mash the gas.

If I were to do it over again, I could get two used cars for less than what I paid for the tacoma and that is probably what I'd do. Id get a used commuter car to put miles on and then an older 4x4 manual trans I could beat up on the trails.

I had an early 2000's ford truck before this. It didn't howl, it didn't whine, it didn't rattle, it had a throttle cable and didn't feel underpowered, I really didn't have many issues with it until 150k miles.

But there are people on here that love their tacomas so like me and them, your experience might vary quite a bit.

Lawyer up. Anything the dealer is not willing to fix and more than annoyance needs a lawyer fix. You might have to arbitration and maybe not.
I am happy with my 2015 Taco but these trucks are made in Baja Mexico and therefore suspect.

People trade in for a million reasons.

Do not use that as any kind of reasoning base.

Baja is a highly decorated, award winning plant.. and they've been building Tacoma's for a long time. As has San Antonio, TX which produces 2016s/2017s also.

I've not seen anything showing the problem trucks are all from one plant, or even that one plant has more problem trucks than the other. Apparently you do.. post them for me.

Hey there Aero90... try the shim kit for the carrier bearing.. cant hurt since Toyota isn't doing anything about the diff anymore. It's a 5 minute fix cost under $20.... I didn't have diff howl but after lifting I could feel a driveline vibration. I installed the shims and lubed .... no vibration and getting better MPGs now as well..

There are so many regrets with the 3rd gen, which is why you see so many low-mileage used ones available.

Best to wait for the 2018's, or purchase a more reliable 2nd gen.

    Example:

Mine was made in Texas. I know I might be able to get a lawyer and go through all that but it isn't worth it. Best case scenario in the end I get a buy back? Not for the full price I paid on the truck either most likely. I'm not upside down on the truck. If i finally decide to, I'll just trade it in, take the loss and say oh well, I tried a new toyota and that's probably the last time.

I I had bought a 2016 Tacoma 4x2 TRD sport.. And at the time I when I bought the truck I wasn't into off roading and what not.. But once I bought the truck I started wanting to do some off roading as well as use the truck around the ranch.. And I kept getting stuck in mud and sand and what not. So I traded mine in for a 2017 off road 4x4. I had the black truck for about 6 months. Only had about 3,500 miles in it. But I never ever had any problems with the truck that other people have mentioned. But then again I only drove it for 3,500 miles. At any rate.. It's unsure to determine why people trade them in. Everybody's reasons are different. Just test drive a couple and see what you like best.

Unfortunately I don't want to do anything obvious that could void the warranty on anything power train related. Its really a crappy place to be in. I could have got a $5k vehicle and spent my weekends messing with it. I remember I spend $30k+ on this one and I lose all inspiration to go mess around with trying to "fix" it.

My 2016 TRD OR 6MT, had nothing wrong with it. It has 3800 miles, and was traded in for a 2017 PRO. The dealer is getting it ready now and being sold as Toyota Certified.

Incorrect. 2025 is the best year. Tacoma will be perfect by then.
