I lost my spare key in the deep waters of Hurricane Matthew. I had it in a magnetic box on a section of the frame that had sides, but the flooded roads washed it out, gone.
I called the dealer for info, was told $36.00 to have a new one cut. I got to the dealership only to find that it's closer to 140.00 us to have a new "smart key" cut.
If I'd have known that the key was so costly I'd never have used it for a hide key.

This base model truck has such a key,,ridiculous.

I'm just an old guy who HATES to have a bunch of shit in his pockets and I didnt know any better so when I got my 07 I went straight to my grinder and went to work on the big ol fat key and made it smaller... damn thing wouldnt work any more, wouldnt turn the ignition switch. I had no idea there was a chip in the key, So... had to go down to the locksmith, $160 later I had two big ol bulky keys and a fob for my pocket... lesson learned!!

Another "Improvement" by the manufacturers to add to the anti-theft arsenal on the truck. No proper key, it won't start...

If you still have the "chip" key you could do this....go to Lowes and have 2 regular no chip keys cut. Take your chip key and gorilla glue it near the ignition but inside the plastic steering wheel trim so it's out of site. Then use the new regular keys to drive your truck. The sensor on most vehicles just needs to be near the ignition! Obviously try starting the truck before you superglue it permanent!

Well after going to home depot and being told they aren't allowed to cut me even a key just for the door I went to Advanced Auto. They don't cut keys at all. They sent me to PepBoys. Pepboys cut me a key. I checked that it worked on the door in the parking lot, it did. I tried it in the ignition and it started the truck. Now, I thought that proximity to the "chip" key hanging on my belt allowed me to start up. I went home, put my "chip" key in the house and drove off. Got about 5 miles from the house and cut off the ignition.

Nope you're thinking wrong,,,Because the new flat pepboys key, no chip nada,,,the truck started right up. So for $1.99 I got a new door/ignition key.
    Now that made my day.

Base models do not have a chipped key. A regular cut basic key should work fine.

Might want to check with your insurance company. By doing this your defeating the anti theft. The anti theft is there for a reason.
