So yesterday on my drive home, I started to notice some funky shifting. Clutch pedal seemed not to rebound as quick as normal. Upon pulling in my drive way, I couldn't shift into gear, had to pump the clutch pedal to get it to go into 1st. Since then its been intermittently doing weird stuff like engaging really low or needing to be pumped to shift into gear. Truck is a 1995, 2.7 4x4 with 116,000 on it.

    • The fluid in the master grossly dirty
    • No leaks have been found
    • There is a bit of a squeak upon pressing the clutch, sounds like out side the truck (I know about the spring in the pedal assembly, I have a friend listen later today to see If we can pinpoint the squeak)

I'm trying to figure out if it is the clutch slave cylinder or the clutch master cylinder or possibly a different issue all together.. I would like to eventually replace both with a quality Aisin components but can't seem to find them at the auto parts store locally. So for now I just want to try and pinpoint the issue grab something from the parts store so I can have it back on the road.

At this point Im looking for advice on how to diagnose this issue, was leaning towards trying a slave cylinder first, because there are no fluid leaks, but can a clutch master Cly go bad with out leaking?

Also what is the proper way to bleed a clutch, I have done brakes, do I just fill the clutch master, pump the clutch pedal multiple times and then hold it to the floor while someone cracks the bleeder?

Can I gravity bleed it by just filling the clutch master and waiting for fluid to come out the bleeder?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If your changing one do both

Yes both the Master and Slave can fail and not have external leaks

Go with Aisin if possible quite a lot of very poor quality parts out there

Might be possible flushing with clean Fluid then bleeding might buy you some time.

I'm not sure how you pinpoint which it is without taking them off but they aren't terribly expensive and bleeding was a pain in the ass for me so just do both of them at the same time. I had to bleed three times because I put a on slave from a wrecked truck, then a new one, and it ended up being the master cylinder anyway. I had to use a vacuum pump to get most of the fluid out of mine.

it's not going to be slave cylinder. a slave cylinder will either leak outright, be physically cracked open, or the bleeder valve will not close/seal.

master cylinder on the other hand, has several extra components taht can fail. at #7, the piston washer, there is a check valve that allows fluid from the reservoir to fill the chamber. that check valve most likely has failed and is just moving fluid freely between the 2 pistons chambers.

Or there is a metal washer that acts as the check valve, and there is enough dirt between it and the supplying piston to allow fluid to freely move between the two chambers. For fun, since you have to change it, open it up and see what makes it tick, it may be something that simple and your cylinder may still be savable.

That makes sense, thanks for posting up that diagram CodeSeven. I will probally change it and pull apart the old one to check out if fixable keep as a spare.

Found a Aisin master cly on Amazon for a decent price, any one know what the part number is for a Aisin Slave Cly (95 2.7 4X4)?

Thanks guys, was getting thrown off by Amazons fitment chart and hadn't found the section to look up part numbers on Aisns site. Parts are on the way!
