Now you know you can't just throw something up like that and not have a DIY somewhere. Looks interesting and somewhat similar to the one I came up with for my FWC that saved me a few hundred dollars. Nice!

yeah good call. I think if i had to do it over, i might just buy a canvas tarp 6x8 for darker shade and sturdiness in the wind. Going to HD tomorrow to pick up some eyelet setting pliers and eyelets.

I have better luck with the eyelet tool that looks like a circular block and a punch, you use a plastic or wood mallet and a couple taps to set the 1/2" grommet.... this is the premium USA made version, good for a lifetime, you can find cheaper ones that will be fine for casual use. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0095ZELTM

of course, you also need a 1/2" hole punch to go with it.

Good idea, i should, just gotta find the time! What i basically did was copy Dave's version from expedition portal. Only thing I'm kinda still developing is how to better attach it to my Yakima crossbars. Right now i roll it up and keep it under my sleeping platform at an angle. Im not confident in it yet to keep it mounted while traveling.

bungi-balls! lay the crossbar over the two yakima bars, and wrap a 6" bungiball around at 45 degrees a couple turns and pop the ball through the loop. done.

same thing I'd be using to secure the tarp grommets to the frame...

    Thanks.
    That tarp is pretty pricey.
For my project I bought two tarps. The second one after I found out the first probably wouldn't provide as much shade as I want.
The first tarp was less than ten bucks at Harbor Freight. It is 6'x8' I think.
Here is the second tarp I bought:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0096M00EY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It is 6x20 and might be too big. I've yet to test it out. I am limited to 6' due to the space between my camper jack attachment points that I'm using to hold the first set of tarp poles.
Weight was also a consideration for me due to the weight of my camper and gear I take camping. REI sells ONE adjustable aluminum tent/tarp pole for about $30.
Well that is ridiculous. So I found this guy on eBay:http://www.ebay.com/itm/131868727226?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
I wanted two sets and my offer of $50 was accepted. So I have four fully adjustable aluminum poles for far less than REI (Ripoff Experts Inc.). I still have the steel coleman type too and will experiment this winter when I can finally get out and test my new setup.

I would also reference CROM's set up in his build thread.

Yep! I think CROM uses these. We had a good deal of shade set up in no time earlier this year in Mojave.

    Hey guys,

Not sure exactly where to spot this and haven't been on here in a while but does anyone have any good sleeping ideas for the bed of the truck? I have a 2005 4 door shortbed and was thinking about sliding a well supported piece of plywood over the wheel wells to maintain storage below and sleep on top. Possible make an extension with the tailgate down for more room as I'm 6'3. I've heard of it being done, but can't find any specific examples. Any ideas of much appreciated!

I can sleep on the passenger's side, leaving a path to get in, my stuff fits under the bed.
But with the dog, I always end up putting the top left(driver's side) shelf on for the night. Once I'm all set up.
    Very basic, needs tweaking.
*Edit. And it's a long bed, important to mention.
But a small extension is quit simple if you look around the internets

Last September with my 46" wingspan, RC plane. GoPro H3 Blk.
This was on the 3rd and last day.
It's Reservoir Mitchinamecus, in Quebec, Canada. It feeds an electrical damn, lower down the river.
    With a 15 truck convoy, 870 miles, 1400 km, 3 days, 3 spots.

First pic is the 3rd morning, heading for the Reservoir after exploring old forest roads, here and there on the way.
Backing up 12 to 15 trucks can be a task at certain times.
Second is arrival on the first day. It's an emergency land strip, built by the end of the cold war.
It was built, along with a belt of radars, along the border, in order the spot aerial attacks coming from the north.
It's been there 50 years and is still in perfect condition.
On that long weekend, a plane club joins up at that place since before we do.
And the third is just a nice set up

10-4 on that one. There are those people that like smelly sh!$*ers and bears in their camps though.

Same. I do the CG thing when I'm in Yellowstone/Grand Teton as it's the only option. I have plenty of "secret" nonCG spots just outside of the parks too. And maybe if there are fire restrictions. It isn't camping if I can't have a fire!
Other wise I'm fine with a flat spot to park, a rock fire ring and an awesome view.

CG campers are just bad campers too - loud, messy, rude. Don't care for that

The Forest service allows propane fire pits here when there are fire restrictions, so that solves that problem. They probably allow them there also, they treat them as a BBQ grill, you can just turn it off.

I'm the opposite, I almost never build a fire when I'm camping, I like seeing the night sky.
