I'm new here but needing help. I have a 2009 Tacoma TRD and I just tried starting it, and it ran for about 5 seconds and then died. After dying the check engine, a/t oil temp and oil lights are all on. Help?!?!

Have a scanner to read the check engine light code?

When I get the codes I will post them. And my truck gas sensor thing in the tank was messed up a couple weeks ago and when my guage was reading 1/4 a tank I was actually out of gas. I got that fixed so it may be another problem stemming from that. I guess we will find out. I'm gonna try to take it to my dealership tomorrow and let them do a tune up and throttle body clean, etc.

Remember to check the seal on your gas cap as well. It will throw codes and cause issues.

What? The cap off kept it from starting? Not likely. I don't think all the info is here.

Absolutely I got very lucky. When I checked my gas cap, it was loose. I tightened up until the click, went back into my truck, turned the key, all the lights went off and my truck started right up. The code reader said no codes were being thrown when we plugged it in. Thanks to everyone again for the help!

The dash lights come on when the key is turned on and the engine isn't running regardless of whether or not there is a code.

This. Also, if the engine shuts off with the key still on, the lights will come on. They aren't actually indicated a problem.

I'd check your electrical grounds and make sure they are all tight.

Not sure how a loose gas cap causes the truck to die
