I have a 2016 Tacoma SR5 (V6, 4x4, access cab). It did not come with a tow package. Now, of course, want to tow something.

I'm willing to pay someone to put a tow package on for me, but I called the dealer today and they said they can't — they said they don't sell a tow package at all, and that no one will put an after market one on. I simply can't imagine this is true. I've read in other threads that I can add one like these (https://www.etrailer.com/hitch-2016_Toyota_Tacoma.htm) to put on a bike rack, etc. But could that hold 3,000 pounds (see below)? Would I destroy my truck that way or cause an accident, even if I just want to do this one trip?

I want to tow about 3,000 pounds across the country (1,600 miles, give or take). What do I need to do to get set up to do this? Was the dealer right and it's simply not possible to add?

Dealer tow is a class IV receiver, bigger alternator and trans cooler.

I am sure you can add those aftermarket. I'd buy an OEM receiver off someone for $100-125 (normal prices on this forum) and install it, you won't need a larger alternator. Trans cooler is nice to have though.

If you had a 2.7 I4 then the dealer is right, they're not offered tow package, your V6 obviously was.

My "Factory Tow Package" came with 7 pin trailer connector, oil cooler, external trans cooler, upgraded battery and upgraded alternator. So I don't doubt they won't install the "tow package".

I think you want a "tow hitch" installed, should be under $150 for a class3, if you install it your self.

Note: Technically, all auto transmissions that I know of have a transmission cooler contained in the stock radiator.

My 15 4 cylinder 5 speed 4x4 came with a receiver hitch and 4 wire plug. It was listed on the window sticker as an installed option. Even has the Toyota plug when the ball isn't installed. I am curious to know how common this is for 2.7s.

I'm in same boat, looking to get a 7 pin installed in place of 4, as well as a brake controller. Just haven't done it yet.
