I don't mind the snow as much as I do the ice. I'm right on the borderline of where the precipitation can be either rain, sleet, freezing rain, or snow. AND, since the county here doesn't plow gravel roads, I have to get through 3 miles of uncleared and untreated gravel roads before getting to a plowed road!
Last winter I had to deal with 3/4" of solid ice with 15" of snow on top of it! Couldn't get down my driveway for over a week, and it took 4 more days of shoveling snow and breaking the ice with a sledgehammer, picks, spud bar and shovel to get to the county road that led to the paved highway!
Have to see if my new KO2s do any better...

We have had as much a 3', but mostly less- not a first responder, but if I don't work I don't get paid, so the I am usually out before the plows and salt trucks- the reason for the chains is that it is a small investment and if it keeps me out of trouble just once it is money well spent.

True, but I think you have more snow upstate-I live by the shore, so full time snow tires aren't as necessary. Good tires are important any season, and when the tires that are on my truck need to be replaced, I will be looking for the best all season.

Well, we had snow for about a week before it melted. Rocking the stock OR tires aired down a bit. They kickass in the snow, but they are "meh" in black ice or slightly wet ice, nothing going slower or 4WD doesn't fix. This is my first vehicle with traction control, and it's basically cheating. Turn that off and you can draw some pretty nice 8's in the parking lot, though!:mudding:

Drove it both on and off actual roads in the snow, 2wd with 240lbs of sand. Most people in my area use studded tires as the roads don't get salted, and only trouble spots get sanded/rocked, but I haven't found that the taco needs them yet. You folks with the limited or sr5 tires are going to want a new set.

Alaska! Big state, and most people have their snow tires on for like 8 months?

Just a bit curious, what's the difference between switching over and having it on like the jeep?

    gotta love the weather here.
Had snow last week, today was 15 degree celsius yesterday was 18 degrees.

@over60 you got any snow up in your area yet? I know Bancroft and Minden already has some.

not sure what model jeep it was, but if it was full time, probably had a centre diff so you could leave it in 4x4 all the time
part time doesn't have a centre diff.

Isn't that the same as leaving the truck in 4wd all the time

    no
you have no centre diff, front wheels and rear wheels will want to turn at the same speed. You can drive straight but if you want to turn, better be on surfaces that will allow wheel slippage like snow, ice, or any off road conditions.

Otherwise run 4x4 on dry pavement and its not fun.

Yeah, September 15th to May 1st is the legal period for having studs on usually. A lot of people rock Blizzaks year-round too. Come May I can kiss this windshield goodbye, rocks everywhere :crapstorm:. It didn't even take a week when I bought the truck in February before I had a couple (sealable) cracks.

Ok makes sense, I guess I was a bit confused cause my last truck (gmc Denali) drove great in 4high unless I attempted to make a wide turn. Is it true that the truck can still be driven in 4high up to 60mph

and ya same case for your new tacoma. if you're going to turn, make sure its either wide and gentle or just turn 4x4 off.

Not a fan of the stock tires on my SR 4x4, obviously. Only thing I'm not smitten about. Will likely just throw some all-a-rounders on there and call it good enough. I've made it through brutal storms all over the high country out west in sedans, so I am chuckling a bit at the thought of snow tires and chains and locked difs in the flatlands. Probably like the alaskans are chuckling at me. I kid, I kid. I do need new tires though.
