now I know why it seems a factory thing and not dealer installed.
You need to cut the bed rails.

Does anyone that had the factory tonneau, that removed it have any pics of what it looks like after?
I'm starting to think I definitely will not get factory one since I don't want cuts in my bed rails. Unless its not a major eye sore.

See pictures in post #1 of this thread.

IMHO it's not an eye sore. Plus if you get a factory tonneau and later sell it off you'd likely want to meet up with the buyer and swap rails & mounting hardware anyway, resulting in the cut rails going to the buyer and putting the gentile rails on your truck.

Hardware mounts were included when I bought tonneau cover off Craigslist.
XrunnerCO had added a PDF of parts numbers on post (#7).

my concern is more so because I'd be going back and forth from tonneau to bed cage.
Every day driving in the city I'd have the cover and all winter so that snow doesn't fill the bed, but spring summer fall I'd likely have the bed cage since I'd be going camping a lot.

To remove plastic bed rail to access Threaded mount holes. Bed rails pull off, I started on rail closest to cab and pull straight up and work your way down to tailgate.

@TPA-TOY Did you get every thing together, or did you get the mounting gear separate? If so where did you get the gear?

I was able to get all the mounting HW with the cover. I was unable to trade plastic bed rails because seller had put on a bed shell. Cutting plastic rail was easy, just make sure not to over cut and make opening to large.

I spoke with a few parts departments at some localish dealerships. The mounting hardware is about 350, rails run 150 each, so about 350 to 700 if I want to install. It is a 650 dollar option from the factory, not worth it in my book. One guy said he priced out everything needed once, it was about 2500 bucks he said. I am going to give back the cover to the guy who gave it to me, I don't feel right selling it, but if some one is interested I will pass on info to him.

    here are some parts diagrams

I am in a similar situation. When you say make sure not to make opening too large will that make it where the caps wont snap back in or would you just ruin the cap. I dont have anything to cut the caps so i will have to purchase something like you mentioned. The guy selling his cover has all the hardware but he installed a camper shell on his so swapping bed rail caps isnt possible.

Toyota actually sells precut bed-rails if you don't want to chance it. It's like 120 bucks or so a rail.

Kinda wish I bought precut ones and just swapped out the rails when necessary, I cut mine with a Dremel tool but I didn't go a very clean job.

Don't make the cut two large. There is a black plastic piece/cover that covers mounting hardware. The bed rail sits over plastic cover holding it in place. I'm referring to pic #3 on first post.
