Nick- isn't the spindle included in the Bumper/Tire carrier combo?

 

It is, but I think he was referring to the second, plain spindle sleeve that he asked Billy for. That way he can protect the spindle from dirt/debris if he ever chooses to run it sans gate. At least that's the way I understood it.

That's a very clever solution, looks clean. If anything drastic happened to my stock brakes I'd consider it. I like the truss on the axle housing.

It is. You need not ask for it. I itemized it because it's not built in to every bumper, adds estimated 10 lbs., and part of weight calculation.

Did this for three straight days, 3X per day.

3/8" still won't fit. Damn flare nut must be 9.8 mm. LOL.

Tried this. Not enough room in the upper frame rail area.

Tried this as well. I didn't want to crank too hard and round off the flare nuts.

I didn't wan't to break anything because of my wheeling trip tomorrow. After the trip, I'll likely go all out and do all kinds of crazy shit to deal with this. Hardlines be damned!!!

Did this. Unbolted the brake line bracket and added about 1.25 inches of washers. Also bent the bracket tabs to gain more extendable soft line length and reduce/improve the angle at full extension. Previous angle was 90 degrees. With this emergency "mod" I think I gained a total of 2" with the OEM brake lines.

Also did this using Cam buckle straps. Both ends had heavy duty hook "eyes." I bolted one end to the frame and the other end to the leaf ubolt. The bungee is to keep the cam buckle from bouncing around and hitting the frame and getting caught between the bump stop and frame. I think it will work pretty good as a limiting strap if I do say so myself

I'm starting to think this will be my route. I'm having a hate/hate relationship with my brake lines right now.When you get a chance @Evenflow , maybe I catch up with you on how to do this and sourcing of the parts?

 

I applaud the DIY effort but that strap is going to break buddy. That is a single ply strap and if you look at real limit straps they are made of a much stronger material and generally 4 plys thick...and they still stretch. Straps should be 4 ply and double shear mounted on both ends.

I got three small tasks done on the truck yesterday.

• I double nutted my radiator bolts, and blue lock-tite'ed them.
• Got carpet installed on tailgate.
• Stripped and cleaned beat-up factory warning sticker from Hi-Lift handle. (looks better)
• Also discovered that the security cable for the dual jerry can holder works to secure my spare on the tire carrier! Nice surprise!

The double stick carpet tape seems to work pretty well. Better than my initial expectations. The only question in my mind is longevity. It was an easy 15 minute job. My youngest daughter still likes the aluminum tailgate skin the best. I tried to explain why we were putting carpet there, but she didn't seem to care. My oldest daughter who assisted with putting down the sticky tape, has determined that the swing out gate works very well as a jungle gym, climbing all over it out to the end and then sitting perched in the middle. It was a fun evening.

I gave the truck a good shake down on a local mountain. Played around on some rocks. (Not pictured) I actually watched my sidewall fold in half, like a 180° fold, on a rock. I didn't know that was possible @ 19 PSI pinched between rim and rock (black rub mark on sidewall).

Wife was like, why did Costco take so long, and why is the truck all covered in dust?

As I am getting ready to build the dual swingouts for my bumper, I have 2 questions for you.

First, what is purpose of angling the tire, as opposed to carrying it vertical?

Second, when you get a chance, could you post close-up pictures of the latch mechanism, both latched and with the gate open?
