TRD Sport vs. Off-Road

What is real world difference between these trim levels? Is the Off-Road package really needed for mild off roading? Does the Sport drive much better on the road in terms of cabin noise and overall feel?

I think the OR has a more compliant suspension than the sport for both on and offroad. It's very comfortable on my 40 mile round trip daily interstate commute.

 

I would the OR is too softly sprung to be as comfortable on road as the Sport. Does the OR get bouncy or feel floaty at all?

 

Doesn't get bouncy at all, very composed especially when going over road grade transitions through intersections at speed that may jar other vehicles.

Damn thing feels like I'm riding in a Cadillac and it feels great. I already have a car to hug the road, I don't expect a 4X4 to do it.

 

I've test driven all of the trim levels in canada. Ended up buying a DCSB off road.
The sport was meh on road. found it a bit too rough on the shit roads around here with all the pot holes.
Off road was smoother on road with a bit softer suspension.

OR has better suspension regardless with the bilstein.
OR has crawl control, multi terrain select, a trac and rear locker.
OR has better resale (if that matters to you)
OR has better approach angle (can be done on sport by removing air dam)
Sport has scoop if you're into fake useless hood scoops
One thing I found the sport better for is you can get it in a long box here.

I waited a year to get mine since 2016 models were not offered as double cab for off road, waited for 2017 and now I can get the double cab.

Cabin noise is probably the same for the two of them.

 

OR doesn't feel floaty to me, and I historically driver more sports cars than trucks. It's slightly easier on the rougher roads than the sport. The bigger difference is the amount of squat when cornering. The stiffer Sport will squat a little less, making the truck feel less boat-y in the corners. In reality, they are both trucks and handle horribly.

 

I love my OR. Does great on curvy mountain roads also.

 

you are on a truck forum, where most go off-road, you will get more in favor of the off road. I got the sport as I don't do that much off roading, and figured the sport was better for daily driving, and I like the look of the scoop. According to Toyota, the sport is designed to be a better road handling vehicle while the off road has more off roading design. I don't think there is all that much different. Oh and the best part is listening to the folks talk about how much better the OR is, then they go and take all that stuff off and put on aftermarket stuff anyways.

 

I actually have a set of 5100s that I bought back in Feb while waiting for my truck to arrive. They're still sitting in the garage waiting to put them on but the stock suspension has been just that good.

I just might sell the 5100s later.

To the OP, just drive them both and see which you prefer. It's what I did.

 

Off road long bed here, it only gets bouncy on the crappy concrete roads (which thankfully are being gradually replaced). An Accord is bouncy on those same roads, but it's more pronounced in my truck. Decent roads, highways, it's very comfortable.

 

Get the OR or Pro. Leave the sport for the women and the bros.

I imagine they drive the same. The Sport looks better to me (painted rear bumper) and is the only one available in the long bed. If you don't do serious offroad you really don't need the Off Road package....
