Indiana is so flat that chains are not legal on paved roads.

The ONLY time I ever had to put chains on a Semi was crossing Donner Summit. Once was enough!

Silica sand, it is a pretty coarse compared to play sand, can use as a traction aid if you really need to. Prefer that over cement blocks/patio stones since those you really can't use them for a traction aid. I put it in real sand bags rather than the paper bag it comes in. The sand bags can take a bit more abuse and can get wet without falling apart.

Reminds me of the driveway we had when I lived in PA, we lived a mile off a state road back in the woods. Needed 4WD just to get up it in the winter. If it got too bad I would bring one of the Bobcats home from work to clear it. It would become a sheet of ice during those freezing and thawing days. Some times you would slide all the way to the main road....and hope for the best. Since the drive was on blind corner, would cut the wheels to the right...so the truck would start to go the right direction when it hit the slab...then hit the gas so you wouldn't get rear-ended.

I had two bags of concrete that was never used for a project I left in the basement that hardened, about 100lbs each. I loaded them in the pickup to take them to the dump and noticed the improved handling. I drove back home, put them back in the basement for when it snows. Wife isn't happy since we basements in the city are small. But, oh well.

I guess I could dump them in the summer to make the wife happy and pick up another 2 bags at $10 a pop in late fall next year.
