I whole-heartedly agree with what you're saying, however in my circumstance I went from ten years of driving this little Honda Fit to a vehicle twice its size in a very touristy coastal down that is not truck friendly.
After 25 years of driving, stick-shifts included, I've learned that I'd prefer to see it and not hit it than hit it and wish I had seen it. Despite considering myself a pretty good driver, since we have the technology, why not use it?

all mods requested by the wife (seriously)
@TVRPhoto For the price of the camera I tested it on a known output source (TV) first. I bet you just got a bad camera, my first one was intermittent. The replacement has been going for almost 2 months and it's on every time the truck is on.

All - I'm running the VIMTY-05 shown above.

My first camera was a dud. Now that I have the replacement camera, I started the install yesterday. Wire harness is all in, just need to run the line out to the front of the truck along with the power hook ups for the camera. I'm installing a standalone fuse block, which will be good in the long run for added accessories like this, but is holding up actual installs until it's done. Maybe tomorrow I'll have some of this finished.

The wire harness does come with directions, but they're not really detailed. Basically, if you throw out the directions and hook up whatever can be hooked up...which sounds worse than it is, I think you'll be fine. Your time will be mostly consumed by running the wire to the front of the truck. The harness is plug and play and not too difficult. Take your time and you'll be fine.
