OK. Even (very) good Scotch whisky isn't enough to watch any more of this mind numbing election coverage. Think I'll catch up on TW, as it is vastly more enjoyable!

    Chuck,

You seem to know a lot about the VA. I spent (just a few month short of) 10 years in the Navy. From 76 to 85. Original GI bill. Since I got out I've had good insurance through, and have never used a single VA benefit.

Sounds like my shoulder is in about the same shape as Chris'. Any idea if I've lost my eligibility for benefits?

You can also go to VFW or Foreign legion and they can help you do all the paper work and explain the process to you.

That was prettt much it. If you still have a copy of your medical records it goes easier. If not, they have to send off for them at central records and that could take some time. Once you have those the service officers comb through them and make a list of claims. They work those up on official forms and help you submit them. Once you get your va appointment, they go theough the list of complaints and confirm them and give each one a rating from 0% on up. 0% means they recognize it but it's not bad enough for compensation. After they rate each complaint, they total the numbers and that's your disability rating. That's all put into your va jacket and , if thing's get worse you can go back and have those rechecked. Then they give you a new rating (or it could stay the same). I've never heard of one going down, but I guess it's possible.

If you did any injury to it or other parts or have hearing issues etc please go see a VSO at the VA or more preferably at least here VFW or Legion not all VSO's are created equal. IT is a long process but it doesn't cost anything but time.

He hit the process with a few things to add 1) Do not be stoic when they ask how does this affect you .. You tell them every way it does in your home life, work and hobbies or they assume it doesn't and you fight more later when it does. 2) VA math is ... interesting shall we say the numbers do not stack google VA math or youtube it and you will see the explanation of how it works. 3) if they can blame it on genetics they will ie does anyone in your family have XXXXX 4) They can reduce you but usually that is PTSD stuff and some other stuff but after an award is 10 years old they can't. See anything else I missed Mike ?

Loss of hearing is an easy 20% disability plus a set of hearing aids for the Veteran . If a disability of 50% or higher any medication is free and also any medical procedure

Well, it did start bothering me in 1976, when I was in the Navy, and chipping paint off of a submarine in dry-dock. They gave me my 1st cortisone injection at that time. But the injection didn't help, so I just ignored it until this year, when it started to get *really* bad. I never had anything documented as I was out-processing. I was in the middle of a med cruise, when my time came, and I was just so dam happy to go home, I made sure that I did nothing to slow that process down.

So I *think* my eligibility is gone at this point. After all, that was 40 years ago...

My experience with DAV was great. In San Diego, their office is in the VA building so they literally walk it next door. All the service organizations in San Diego area go through the DAV. I don't know if that's a regional thing or not. But DAV was very thorough and VA substantiated everything. And, since it was my retirement physical,.VA actually added to it with the x-rays. But there service organizations really help the service members.

It has to be in the right tones. I had a significant loss of hearing but they rated me 0% because it wasn't in the right tone ranges.
