im just going to copy and paste what i posted in a different forum. but it has been bugging me since it happened yesterday. i was the 3rd vehicle on scene and was doing what i could. this was my post last night after i got home

i was just south of laramie wyoming tonight on my way home from picking up my truck on 287. came across a 3 fatality accident. it happened just a few minutes before i arrived. a couple cars were there with idiots taking pictures. i had to act as first responder until emergency personnel showed up. it seems people dont care and just sit in their vehicles waiting for something to happen or like a few assholes, taking pictures of the scene. mom and dad were already dead. i checked for pulse on them and got nothing. i knew mom was gone because of how the vehicle looked and how she was basically part of the vehicle at that point. i was hopeful for dad, but upon closer inspection, i saw brain tissue. luckily it was quick and hopefully painless. the first on scene was a wyoming highway patrol. we notifed him of the 2 fatalities in the minivan and told him of the 3rd in the cab of the burning semi. so he made the necessary calls immediately. both kids survived, however a helicopter was being called in for the youngest. im guessing around 10 years old. he could not talk, was just screaming randomly. im afraid of some brain damage on him. older son was alert and talking to us. he was in an awkward position. the front passenger door was still latched, but the top and bottom of the door was pulled out and he was just standing there pinned because the door wouldnt open. not exactly sure how he got in that particular position. looked to be a broken arm. also had a hard time walking, but didnt seem to be in any real pain. minivan vs semi truck. the accident was so bad, that the entire motor of the minivan was missing. and the front end drivers side was smashed so bad, the a pillar was right next to the b pillar. truck misjudged decline and turn and hit head on into the minivan on the drivers side. the semi truck went off the road and caught fire. too big for any fire extinguisher. it was well engulfed and the fire dept was bringing a tanker. the minivan ended up backwards against a guard rail. which posed the problem of extraction of the youngest boy. but after the ambulance crew showed up they were able to get him out and to medical attention. it just seems so heartless for all the people who just sat there in their cars and/or taking pictures of whats going on. i understand once emergency teams show up to stay out of the way, but come on, if theres no emergency vehicles, lets at least try to help instead of sitting on their asses. once the highway patrol showed up, he still was asking me to help, which i did. and when ambulance arrived they didnt have enough light because they couldnt get a vehicle on the other side of the guardrail with emergency lights. luckily i had my hand cannon flashlight which really helped them out. but damn..... those people. i really wanted to grab their phones and smash them, but i was busy trying to organize the situation until help arrived. im still pissed at those people. a couple people did try to help, but of the 8 vehicles that were there before help arrived, only 2 people in one vehicle came to help. the others want to be the first one to post that shit on facebook or whatever the fuck they use these days. i am going to call the wyoming highway patrol tomorrow to see if i can get any news on the kids. im worried about the youngest. i just wish people would respond differently to these situations. if it was someone they knew, they would be tearing at the doors to try to get them out, but because they dont know who they are, they dont seem to care, and just sit and watch and wait. i need to go to bed, i cant be pissed anymore. i need sleep. i will update this when i have more info

if it were your family and you had a bunch of bystanders taking pictures of the wreck, and not offering any help until emergency crews showed up, how would you feel? i just got pissed at the picture takers

Unfortunately that's the normal these days, good for you for still being decent and trying to do whatever you could.

Not listing out fine details on the topic, I just don't think they're having an easier time sleeping at night than you are.

Loss of life and a destroyed family are the tragedies. Every person on scene not being capable of rendering aid is not.

People respond differently than others do. Don't let it bother you or effect what you do.

having picture takers rather than people offering to help just really annoys me

thats my main point. the accident was horrible and shit does happen. not many people can stand having to check pulse on what could be a dead body, as was the case here, i checked both deceased parents pulse to make sure. being as cold as it was we could have used more blankets, a little help trying to open doors, im stiff as a board today because i exerted so much energy trying to open a door. nobody needs to be an expert, but i just hate seeing people post the pictures

I don't understand the taking pics part that's just odd, but I do know not everybody has the ability to pull up to something like that and be able to help. Maybe not cause they don't want to but they are in shock and don't know how to. Was it on the wyo side of 287?

I sorta of agree with you. Mainly on the point about folks who are over zealous with the cell phones....it's sad what technology has done to society and how we react to the world around us.
On the other side, some folks have no business interfering and I'm sure many in the medical community would agree that well meaning Mr Joe Bystander can often do more harm than good.

Personally I always stop to check on folks who are broke down (especially when it's in the middle of nowhere, bad weather, etc) or if there's been a wreck. If there is already a few cars stopped who are actually witnesses to whatever incident I just keep on going, figure the more cars stopped the bigger the hazard.

A few weeks ago I came across a carload of college kids who had rolled their vehicle off the side of the road. Some kids in a 2nd car were there and the one injured kid had already been taken into town by another passerby. I stopped and asked if they needed anything, they declined, and I went on my way. Passed by a couple hours later, tow truck was just moving into place to retrieve the car and I stopped again to see if any of them wanted a ride back to town as they had been there for several hours and would be there for several more while the tow truck did it's thing. They again declined and I left so I wouldn't be in the way.

You did your best. That is what matters. Seek some first responder first aid training, if you have none. You proved to be someone there when needed. Serenity prayer, cold beer, good nights sleep. Tomorrow comes with no mercy. Never give up.

this wasnt your typical minor injury accident. unfortunately 3 people died and nobody could move their vehicle. i understand the whole "you can do more damage" thing, but we werent moving people. i was just trying to get access to them so i could get a better understanding of the injuries to the survivors and to try to add blankets. it was cold last night out there. just wanting to do anything possible that would make extraction easier for the ambulance

i have family in fire and leo. i know the basics. i am not trained to move an injured person so i leave that to the emergency crews. just trying to find some way to help until all the emergency personnel showed up

it was sad. the oldest boy was in severe shock. he kept referring to his parents by name, not mom or dad. checking the pulse on them i was going to tell him that they didnt survive, but he knew already and was calm throughout. i am expecting a call from wyoming highway patrol as a follow up. im hoping to get more details when they do

If i am ever in a bad accident i pray there is someone like you there at the scene. I would have done exactly as you did .. some people today totally amaze me as their first priorities are social media and standing there taking pictures at a fatal accident, shame on them

to me its just common sense. see something bad, try to help. we are missing the days when this was more common. to me its social media. people post pictures trying to get likes or whatever they give to get a better status. i dont use facepage, or tweeter or whatever. its all the ones that are obsessed with it and thats why theres nobody around to help anymore. too many videos and pictures being posted and not enough action being taken. i know that everyone here would have done the same thing i did. the group here are all action takers. thats what we need more of. none of this "look what i saw today, omg!" it gets old.

on another note, im stiff as a board today. i exerted so much strength and energy trying to open doors to the minivan, i expended myself and over strained my muscles. my wife says i look like a 90 year old man trying to walk down stairs
