i was fortunate never to have had to be involved in any battles and have always had a hard time considering myself a veteran. i have never felt i deserved to be considered in the same company as the brave people of both past and current wars who sacrificed so much for us and our way of life. it makes me want to throw up when i see these scenes on the news of young people burning our flag protesting an election. it is there right to do these things in this free and beautiful country that these sacrifices have been made for and too many sacificed all. it is to these our war veterans that i feel our thanks are due. may god or whoever you worship bless this wonderful country in these troubled times. nice post op

    Exactly.... Even though
I did see some action and was bombed at Khobar Towers.... I don't consider and can't bring myself to be placed in the same categories as those veterans who served in WW2 and Vietnam or Fallujah and Afghanistan. Not discounting the others but it's just the exact reason we signed up in the first place. I would do it all over again too!!

I tell ya'll who might not know but us Vietnam Vets didnt didnt get treated well when we came back from that hell hole... people spit on us and called us "baby killers" and so forth so these days when people treat us kind and show us appreciation we dont know how to accept it... we sheepishly glance around and wonder if they really mean it and stuff but it sure is getting better like today I had a free dinner at Olive Garden... well that sure was nice of those folks and its kinda like, I can hold my head up and be proud of what I did at last... just my ranting... thanks for listening... ;)

civillians back then were a bit different i think and i can assure you we appreciate what you did and what you had to go through upon your return we regret. my wifes grandpa was a d-day vet from coosbay he couldn't hardly hear from all the shelling that day. what a wonderful man when he passed he left me his hand made bowie knife he used on d-day and through the war. i miss him and listening to his storries.

I hear ya brother and I do still struggle with it. I was in the Navy from 1975-1981 and served on two carriers with my squadron out of NAS Miramar, San Diego. All we did was play war games in the Mediterranean and north Atlantic ...I was in long enough to be called a Viet Nam era vet (you had to be in for 90 days before May 7, 1975). I joined February 1, 1975 so I just slid in under the wire with a few extra days to spare. I had several friends die during the Tet Offensive. One of them was my assistant scout master. I was only 13 at the time but the die was cast. All I could think about was joining the service to, in some small way, repay the sacrifices my friends made.

As it turned out, I was in exactly between two wars. I have friends that are combat Nam vets as well as desert storm vets and others that were involved in hand to hand battles and skirmishes in the Middle East... I hold them in the highest regard.

Thanks to all that answered the call...

I want to thank all veterans for the freedom they provide past present future.Looking back when I was younger I should have joined the service.I admire everything they do for us.I especially couldn't imagine the sacrifice so many paid on d-day.Those were some of the bravest men.

More than I can shake a stick at...
You should NEVER feel that your service is less important than those who have seen combat! Be thankful that you haven't. You still raised your right hand and took an oath to uphold the Constitution and defend our country from it's enemies both foreign (war) and domestic (voting:D). You've ran until you puked and you did so many damn push-ups that you couldn't raise you arms to wash your shaved head! Just because you didn't get shot at by Charlie or Haji doesn't mean you weren't ready to defend this great nation if you were called upon to do so. The percentage of Americans who have ever served is very low, something less than 8%. Less than .05% are currently serving. That puts us in a very close knit community and only we know the pride of wearing our Nations uniform and what our Flag stands for. So raise your glass, this one's for US.

I always feel odd when people thank me. I didn't join for any altruistic reasons, and I stayed because it was the best way I could care for the wife and son I found myself providing for at 19.

Joined at 17 to get the hell out of the ghetto. Worked out for me...
