I really want blacks rims on my 2017 Super White SR5, and I was planning on buying a set of the factory black 16" Trail Team rims, but they are $700 dollars shipped plus the $47 per tire that Les Schwab Tires wants to remove a tire from a rim and Install it on another rim and balance it.

I also like the stock spoked 16" alloy rims that came on my SR5, and I found a powder coater that will strip and powder coat the rims for $65 each in semi gloss black. So the problem was it was going to be really a hassle to take all 4 wheels off of my truck, have the tires removed, wait for the rims to be powder coated and have the tires re-installed on the rims.

So laying in bed this morning it came to me that I can remove the spare tire and then take one rim off at a time and replacing it with the spare. Then I can have the tire I can have the tire removed, the rim powder coated and the tire installed back on the rim, and repeat this 3 more times. Doing it this way will save me $440 over the Trail Team rims including the cost for R/R the tires

Yes I won't have a spare time during this period, but I do have AAA with 100 mile towing, and I also plan on carrying two large cans of fix-a-flat with me and a plug kit as well as my 12v tire compressor. I also plan installing 265/75 R16 tires after the stock ones wear out which will fit on the 7" rims

I've already done center caps with black plasti-dip, and yes I could do the rims in it, but I want the look of the semi gloss black.

I don't recommend one wheel at a time. Just like paint can have small lot to lot differences the same goes with powder. Maybe it won't be noticeable in black, but semi gloss who knows. I would find a way to do all at once.

Check your local guys and see if anyone has a set like yours to swap. Or even a full set wheels and tires still mounted to borrow. If anyone local to me we're in that situation I'd help them out. Just a thought.

Paint matching aside I think you are going to end up hating your life if you go through with this plan. The cost of the remove/reinstall is going to suck, because I'm pretty sure they will charge you more over the course of the project than just getting them all done at once...
I would say it's not worth the hassle.
But it's your truck and if it's what you want.

I thought about that myself, and if I could find another rim and tire to use I could do two at a time, then it wouldn't matter if there was any variance in the finish or color, as each two sets will be mounted on each side of the truck and you would to see any difference between each side.

I do my own powder coating for my custom motorcycle parts business in an large electric oven, but it's not big enough to do a truck rim in, but I powder coat parts in semi gloss black all the time and the color and finish is very consistent.

So I think I'm going to proceed with my plan, as I feel that if there is a slight difference in the powder coat which I don't believe there will be, the wheels are far enough apart you wouldn't be able to notice a slight variation between them.

I thought about that also, so I'm going to call up Les Schwab tomorrow and explain to them what I'm planning on doing as see how if changes the cost over what they quoted me.

If you were in DFW, I have a set of stock '13 sport wheels and tires you could roll on.
