IMG_0354.jpg IMG_0352.jpg I noticed a leak around the oil pan and between the back of the engine and tranny. The truck is a '15 model and has less than 10k kms on it. Dealer replaced the rear main seal and a few other seals under warranty. The service advisor mentioned that he has seen a few too many with this issue and wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a recall/TSB soon.
    Check yours out.

Looks like it's leaking at the bottom of your bell housing. Do you have an automatic tranny? Can you tell if the fluid leaking out is red?

Mine has 36k miles on it, and I'm pretty sure mine is leaking too. We took that little plastic cap off and there was definitely a bit of oil coming down.

Like the OP, about a month ago I was noticing oil on the bottom of my oil pan. Wiped it off but after a couple days it kept coming back.

Have an appt tomorrow to take it in.

That is Toyotas frame rust solution.

I'll have to check my 2015, didn't see any when I greased the U joints or did the last oil change but thanks for the heads up.

Reading around, I found these two quotes. Do these make sense to any of you guys?

I changed my oil about a month ago - roughly the time I suppose I started noticing the drip. I used synthetic during the change.

A few weeks ago I also took a pretty good thump in the front end while off-roading. Enough to destroy my TRD skid plate (not that that's hard to do). Not sure how that could affect an internal seal though - if in fact this leak is from the RMS. It's at the shop now and haven't heard anything yet. I'll report back.

What kind of off-roading do you do?! It's sitting between the back of the engine and the transmission and that area is heavily bolted together. Unless you're taking your taco for some "pretty sweet jumps". . .

As far as the synthetic vs conventional oil goes that could be true for worn out seals in an old engine. We are talking about an issue that's affecting relatively new engines (mine has less than 10,000 kms)
Also as I mentioned, the service ppl at my dealer said they were familiar with this issue and are expecting Toyota to formally address it soon.

haha. I'm not doing any Raptor jumps or anything.... But I agree, I'm not sure how an impact could alter an inner seal. But my knowledge is pretty limited.

Heard back from the dealer. He confirmed that, yes, there is oil leaking from up there somewhere, and he mentioned there were multiple seals. They want to keep it for a week(!!) to tear it down and replace them. He admitted that it isn't the work that would take that long, but just finding the time for his lead techs to do it. So I guess I get to drive a Rav4 for awhile.

Yeah they had mine for 3 days. It's an 8.5 hour job, and they had to order the seals. They have to remove the transmission to get in there.

Got the truck back and it has been completely dry down there for a couple days now. They replaced the rear main seal. So that's good. But it still sucks that I had to deal with it in the first place.

My mechanic just diagnosed both my rear main seal and oil pan leaking. 2007 with 85k. 1500 plus parts. Not cool.

Ouch! Hold on to your receipts in case Toyota does something about this down the road.

I swear I am selling this SOB if mine starts leaking before 75K... I am getting a little irritated with Toyota's quality these days.

    a)You're still under warranty.

b)If it happens after, they will likely reimburse repair costs like they did with the leaf springs (friend of mine got a check in the mail without him even asking)

    c) Name one alternative truck manufacturer that you think is less problematic.

My warranty is long gone, I had the 36K. Sorry to vent, but I am sick of Toyota's shade tree mechanics and the dopey, falsely-reassuring smiles I get when I go into the service department. I hope your dealership offers better mechanics, all the parts-changers at my local Toyota dealerships are just kids with wrenches and ASE certificates... and 2 years of experience. It is frustrating. At least 50% of the stuff they have fixed on my truck, has either not been done correctly the first time, or has taken weeks to have repaired.

    AND...
A rear main would be especially bad for me since I have the 6 speed manual. Once they leak long enough, the clutch starts to slip. And, really, of all the things you don't want to fuck up, the rear main has got to be in the top 10.

Sorry guys... old and cranky, need my afternoon nap.

I had the driver's side front hub bearing go out of my Silverado the third winter I had it (like 40k miles). Took it to the dealer I bought it from, they said 'sorrry, no warrenty. $800'. I had them put it back together, and put an aftermarket hub on it for $200, because FUCK them and their shit.

But the crazy thing is I knew two other guys at work with the same year Silvy and one with an Avalanche, both had the same bearing go out at about the same mileage.

Like @Jazz1one said, if your gonna move away from the Toyota, where you gonna go? GM? Ford? Good luck with that.
