I've had a 00, 08, 11, 15 and now my 16. There's give an takes with both. I like the interior and mpg on my 2016 over my 2015 and previous 2nd gens. However, out of the 5 Tacoma's I've owned my 16 has had the most "issues" of the bunch in the shortest time span of ownership. Some will tell you there's only a few of us with issues, but if your an educated person and someone who clearly has been a TW member and Tacoma owner for awhile there is no doubt the new trucks are having more teething issues that the previous trucks did not have which makes one question long term reliability down the road, the 2nd gen is proven, so it really comes down to what's important to you, new features and enhanced content with still unproven reliability or proven reliability but a 10 year old design.

I had a2015 now a 2017, love the 17 better. Both were trd off-road double cab short bed, 17 is just more refined. Power wise both are pretty much equal, just different rpms to do the same power. If I drove the 17 in s mode in 5th gear it would feel the same as the 15, with about the same mpg.

I love all the new owners giving you there 2 cents. Of course the 16 will be loads better from a feature stand point, the outgoing truck is a 10 year old design, however so far the QDR is behind in comparison on the 16, no arguing that. I think OP is trying to weigh out taking a gamble for fun new features/design over proven QDR. Like I said each truck has its strong suits. Best of luck with your choice OP, either I think would be a good one.

Kind of hard for you to give a fair opinion, I'm giving an opinion based on having 5 Tacomas. This new engine transmission combo does take a while to get used to, but it's not much different once you do. I will say after undercoating both generations, the 3rd generation frame is built more beefier. Hopefully they didn't sacrifice the engine instead for long term reliability. Choose which ever generation you like they are both good trucks.

How is it hard for me to give a fair opinion, I've owned a 2000, 2008, 2011, 2015 and now a 2016 (AC, AC, DCSB, DCLB, DCLB), 5 tacomas just like you?...The 3rd gen frame is the same design with a few more cross members and updated "materials", but the c channel design is still susceptible like the 2nd gens to frame rot issues, the average person wouldn't really notice the difference between 2nd and 3rd gen frames. For me as a new buyer I would question long term reliability in regards to the new transmission and differential, both having more than a few reported issues here. But as you said both are a good choice just different reasons for each.

Yep my bad just noticed you have a 16. The frame on my 17 looks more beefed up in the trouble spots on the 2nd generation. I'm only leasing this one though, and if it holds up then I will probably buy the next one.

No worries, yep same design with added cross members and supposed new material. Only time will tell.

Agreed, and as you said the power difference is almost negligible in my opinion from the 4.0 to 3.5, most wont notice or care. What troubles me is the diff issues, transmission issues, transfer case issues, cps issues that more than a few have had here including myself. If Toyota didn't step up and replace it and offer me the max platinum extended warranty I would be in a different truck. Which is partly why I'm a repeat customer, Toyota has always done right by me, I know some others have had issues though with CS.

I wouldn't be happy if I had issues like you and some of the other members either. My 15 was a good solid truck, just liked the updated 17 better.
