Just brought my truck to my local dealer last week for 5k service and to address the 55mph rear diff whine. Was told that this obnoxious noise was "normal" for these trucks and that there was nothing they could do for me. Since many others have had full diff replacement and still have this issue doesn't seem like there are many options for a sure-thing fix.

Anyone else thinks its not worth it to chase this issue down since Toyota doesn't know how to fix it? If it is fixable, what's the next step when your dealer refuses to do anything about it?

I'm hoping the OP's replacement does the trick and the howl/whine sound doesn't come back.

To me if the dealer doesn't help, then next in the food chain is Yota, time to make a call, if its normal talk to them about how long this normal diff will last.

They wont fix it a third time, because then it activates a lemon law situation in most states. Although, I believe there is still a legal argument for the lemon law if they refuse to attempt the third time to circumvent the rule.

Also, calling something a "characteristic of the vehicle", while technically accurate, does not mean that it isn't a problem or an issue that needs to be resolved. Recalls all stem from "characteristics of the vehicle"--remember the brakes failing? That was a characteristic of the vehicle.

So don't let them tell you that like the case is closed and thats where it stops. If its a "characteristic" that a regular person wouldn't find normal or acceptable, they still need to address it. I've never owned a vehicle where its "normal" to vibrate to a stop or howl loudly at highway speeds.

Side note: I wish there was a way to force Toyota to advertise these "characteristics of the vehicle". IF thats how they want to play it, then they should put something in their brochure "This new redesigned model utilizes a harmonic resonance chamber in the rear differential to maximize reliability. You'll hear it activate at 55-65 mph!" "New brake design uses rumblevibratronics to increase braking efficiency while minimizing rotor wear!"
