    5100 Billy's set at 0" with 881 coils
I recently had the Bilstein 5100 adjustable front shocks installed with 881 coils. I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma prerunner 2wd. The part number on the shocks I installed were 24-249928 which has 4 different lift settings. I have the shock set at the 0" setting since I paired them with the 881's coils. My issue is I keep hearing a popping noise on the front passenger side and I am curious if its my LCA bushings since the 5100 shocks are longer then the stock socks I had on it before.

Has anyone ran into this issue?

What kind of popping noise? Is it morel like a 'pop' or a 'clunk'? Over bumps or while turning?

I have the 5100s with 881s as well, I get a "click" sound when going over bumps from the driver's side. I've been reassured that it's considered normal for the spring to click sometimes when compressing so I don't worry much about that one. I did start getting this popping/clunking sounds when turning though about a month after I installed my lift. I ended up replacing the ball joints and upper control arms to no avail (they needed replacing anyway as they were worn). One day I was off-roading and it was especially bad, then it suddenly just stopped. Weird. Talked to a mechanic buddy of mine and told him about it, he said it was most likely the sway bar links. Not something to really worry about but it's common for them to pop after lifting your truck. Mine comes and goes now but I don't worry too much about it anymore, plan on removing the sway bar entirely anyway at some point.

I have the same set up and I have no pops or clicks or clunks, even when I'm fully turning and going over a speed bump, maybe your ball joints are getting old?! I'm at 150k on my whole truck

I had a couple pops and clunks recently. Check your tie rods (inner and outer), ball joints (upper and lower) and anti sway bar and links.

Pretty sure the Billie/RCD 5100 for 1st gen Tacomas only have three notches. 0, 1.25", and 2.5". I recall reading 1st gen Tundra shocks have 4 notches along with the 2nd gen variety.

Did you assemble the shocks yourself? Any pics of the top hat portion of the shocks when sitting at ride height?

They have 4 notches now, I got mine a few months ago for my 2004 and they have 4. Just set them to .85 last week.

Must have changed recently because the shop I went to get them adjusted at thought the same thing (that they only had 3 notches) until he got the first shock off.

Yeah, used to be those shocks only had the 3 settings. Not sure when the design changed.

    interesting, I noticed the D558 5100s have 3 settings, and the 24-249928 5100's (Which I have) have 4 settings.

not to long ago, someone said the same thing and thought they might have sent the wrong shocks. but right after I had a tire shop install them, that's when the popping noise began. They replaced my outer tie rods, upper and lower ball joints. I am thinking it may be my LCA since these shocks are longer... but i don't have the MULA to go and chase down the issue because we all know how much it is it get the LCA replaced.

I changed my rack n pinion, wheel bearings and both CV axles and the clinking & popping noise I had is gone! I also have Camburg UCA's but have had those way before any noises. So I know it wasn't them. Good luck OP!

My money would be on your sway bar links then (assuming you still have your sway bar on) if all those other items have been replaced. That or possibly the steering column bushings. I've never heard of the LCA being a common culprit but I guess that's also something to consider.

Thank you all for the inputs. I will remove my sway bar this weekend and see if that helps.

Even if the noise isnt the sway bar your back and kidneys will thank you for ditching that sway bar especially since you have nice new and stiffer suspension on there...
