Recently @wileydavis gave me the opportunity to test one of their new phone mounts for a 2016 Tacoma.

First off here is what I got from them.
    8D9419EA-5909-4F32-BF63-E4545C4667EB_zps_e52ab0c3f9aa33fc289a2869d5afae83f4c1237c.jpg

Came with the no-drill mount (built for the vent), all of the Ram mounting hardware, and a Perfect Squeeze mount.

Opening it all up, here is what I got.
    210464AF-3CD3-4E56-BCC9-C5BC411D786B_zps_07c82b8297b99fdafa7ef396e8cb6a2489bd0d96.jpg

In order to get this thing installed you need two Allen wrenches; 3/32 and 5/32. I made a mistake installing mine the first time and had to remove it. This made me a little nervous, with my past track record I was just waiting to drop a screw into the heater vent.

It can be installed two ways (the first here is wrong and jams the vent fully open).

Don't install fully open like this:
    6F069952-0A31-4C58-9DB6-305F21F3457C_zps_bb51539d6ba0519b0804d852d2a98ee042eada35.jpg

But like this. Doing it this will still allows a little open and closing, but no rotating.

To show the amount of opening and closing you can do. One of them is nearly closed the other is maybe 60% open. Also shown is the actual mount. It's four little screws. I'll skip the install other than it's super easy. He has a video on how to install it - which is much better than me just typing with some pics.

Next the first part of the Ram mount. And with that, what has been seen cannot be unseen...yes it looks like a face.

I'll skip to installed part. Again, its super easy. Just assemble some brackets and screws. No real mistakes can be made. Unless you drop a screw under the seat like I did. No, the center console lid does not make a good screw holder.
    C03B3C3B-67F4-4515-80D0-56D33D73AB66_zps_21d6a37a0e95c406f3562e49a218a081e62dcc1c.jpg

This can obviously be adjusted however you want. I ended up installing it fairly close to the wheel. But with enough room to not hit it while steering. I really like the location of this mount. I had been looking at some that mount above the radio but here it's in the perfect spot for the driver. Here it is with my phone.

For the trip I went down a fairly rough road for about ten miles, then some short rock crawling, then back on the road. I was also testing out my new stage 5 Icon kit. So a lot of the road was taken faster than I normally would. Bumpy enough my abs are a little sore today. I never once had to adjust or re-adjust the mount. I'm using an iPhone 6 plus with a fairly heavy wooden/rubber case. With the close to driver location I had no issues reading my topo maps - any farther away and I probably would have had trouble. The actual mount was also solid and didn't rotate or come loose.

For fun I then grabbed a 2.5lb plate and mounted it up high to create as much leverage as I could.

I only used this a little on the off road trip towards the end and on my way to work. This is pretty much pushing the limits of what the factory plastic can hold. It moved a little more than my phone and pulling slightly on the weight you could see the dash flexiing a bit. But hopefully no one is using a phone that heavy. I'm sure one would be okay with an iPad or something like that. I only tried my phone and a weight. So take that with a grain of salt.

Only negative points were a couple of rattles. First one was when i first mounted my phone the Perfect Squeeze rattled around town. But the second (and every time after that) it never rattled. I'm assuming that was just an install error the first time. I also mentioned to him it rattles without a phone - he assured me you can just tighten the adjuster screw and the rattle shouldn't be there without a phone. Based on fixing the rattle with the phone, I can assume that probably true.

For what's out right now I think is the best choice for someone that wants to use there phone for navigation. It's easy to see and adjust and doesn't block any of the windshield.

I'll be taking it to Moab for 4 days over Thanksgiving and will do a follow up then. Feel free to ask any questions in the meantime.

I think I read it correctly, but to be sure...
Once the ring is mounted, the vent cannot be rotated?
I don't think this is a huge issue, just want to make sure it is where you want it, before you mount the ring.

Exactly. I just mounted it vertically straight. You get a little open and close action but not rotating. Most of the time I never rotate them anyway so I didn't care.

Since it just clamps on you can always loosen tighten until you get your preferred angle.

Excellent. This is the solution I've been waiting for. I don't like the idea of having something stuck to my dash with double sided tape.

    Really interested in this.
As a side note, some devices may get really hot in the sun, especially if they are colored black and/or have a case on them. You might want to mount it with the AC vent pointing up, towards the device to blow cool air on it. This is almost a requirement here in FL heat.

Thought I recognized the name. The Hondo guys made that clamp a while back for bikes, had my hands on them before.

Very well made piece of kit, they have a good rep with the adventure rider guys.

Is there any concern that the hondo ring will mar the surface of the vent outer surface ?

Mine shipped today. I just want to make sure to protect the vent bezel so when I take it off it looks ok.

I am probably overthinking this like I do everything else. :)

If you're worried you could cover the face of the ring in electrical tape first then clamp the ring on. The ring isn't sharp and won't dig in. And on mine at least the plastic has no paint or coating on it, it's just black plastic, so any small scratch wouldn't show.

Judging from the way it mounts I believe you're over thinking it. When I mounted mine that thought never crossed my mind. There's nothing about it that should cause scratches that I noticed.

My mine came in today and yes I was overthinking it. Nice product. The only issue I had was the screws were not long enough for my ram ball mount about .25" to short.
