Looks like they do a lot of contract air bridge work. Makes sense. A-10s take FOREVER to get over to the middle east, and can't make it over the pond without help.

My buddy told me stories of military-grade meth and serial refueling his F117 from NM to various places across the pond.

The drugs go back to Operation EL DORADO CANYON (attack on Libya in the 80s). 28 hour round trip from England to Libya and back because France wouldn't let them transit France to get there.

Funny Desert Storm trivia - when the F-111s arrived in Saudi, they did a VERY low altitude pass over the French bivouac area because REVENGE. When the French complained, there were suddenly no non-French witnesses.

    I love that story.

Well, if were gonna do Desert Shield/Storm A/R stories -

During the air bridge build up, there were a limited number of A/R qualified C5 pilots. The A/R qualified pilots flew a vastly extended "duty day" in which they slept onboard the aircraft and were woken when it was A/R time. I don't recall exactly how long, but many of them spent literally days flying back and forth.

That would suck ass. But then I think of infantry in muddy trenches for weeks and I think otherwise.

C-5s tended to be equipment only, with only a few folks attending to shelters of vehicles or working as classified couriers. Most folks flew on contract 747s or DC-10s. Tower or World Air. Cattle cars.

They were called "Freedom Birds" but they were anything but free. You were lucky if you catch one half full; normally they weren't.

...^^^... IIRC ... that (and other things) was an idea hatched years ago at Southern Air Transport ... but the powers there didn't want it to happen.

As do I. Flying for work, and fly for fun on my days off. It is a difficult balance to maintain.
