Anyone want to talk SPOT vs inReach? Both are on sale at REI right now, seems like good prices.

Getting paid to sit on my couch, drink beer, and make sure these ex-convicts don't steal my stuff as they pack.

    What did Ice cube say?

    Today was a good day.

Used an inReach while commercial fishing in Alaska to get messages back and forth from town. It worked well there. Never had any experience with SPOT. Nice for getting your location and a message out.

A very strange thing just happened with my truck.

I went to the store, parked, bought stuff, came back from the store and stopped my truck in the driveway. Got out, hit the alarm, the beep was half as long and the door wouldn't lock. Unlock, same thing.

Tried to start the truck, gauges/lights come on and start flickering. I try to start it to see what happens, nothing at all. Starter isn't moving, stereo is running but dim and not flickering. All other lights in the truck were flickering. Ok dead battery.

Check the battery, 12. 74v and holding steady. Try the alarm again, same thing. Took battery out and had it tested, came back ok. Checked all my cables/grounds, good.

Plugged in battery, everything is working as normal. Checked battery voltage after starting it and shutting it off, 12.75v and holding.

    WTF?

I've heard that spot has improved dramatically over the past few years.
Inreach is nice because of the gps and text communication are in 1 device.
In my research , I wanted global comms and went with iridium go.
It pairs with your cell phone and creates its on wi-fi spot. It's worked flawlessly in the Arizona wilderness and backcountry.
    https://www.iridium.com/products/details/iridiumgo
The monthly plan allows for text and global voice communications.

It all comes down to how often do you go off grid. Verizon has the best service in the state and I'm amazed I get a signal hunting in some of these deep canyons. But to be able to communicate anywhere on the planet - encourages adventure. Which sometimes meaning going solo.

Either way you go it's a great (mandatory) piece of gear.

Whatever it was, it sounds like you reset it when you pulled the battery.

@RPS1030 or anyone else that does some metal work. What do you suggest for ear plugs. I did some grinding and cutting and my left ear is really mad at me.

I could only find a small dirt hill nearby. not sure if I will have to do more cutting when I can stuff it better.

I had the exact same problem when I last went through rats eating my wires. Drove the truck home from the dealership after some repairs. Pulled into the garage to repair head light and aux light wires. Get done, turn truck over and it did the same thing you are expierencing. Battery read fine. Eventually stumped, I went and replaced the battery cause I couldn't afford to be stranded somewhere with the same problem later on. Since replacing the battery, never had a problem.

That's okay, cause my truck is making a gnarly squeak when I reverse. Just started today. Aaron tried looking for where it's coming from when I back up but no clue.
