Sorry, I already had one dumb fuck rear end my car last year because he was texting and driving. Considering 4 people die a day due to distracted driving and careless driving, maybe some people should smarten up and not be so selfish and ignorant while driving.

 

For the thread though, I use a DODTech LS470W for the front facing camera (turns on with ignition)
For rear facing I have my older DODtech LS430W turns on with ignition as well.

Great picture quality on both of them. Same camera just the 470 has GPS as well.
Both use sony lenses and record 1080p full HD with great night video.

 

I have a dashcam in all my cars but have not install one on my the new Tacoma. Saw a driver run a red light with cars passing on the other lane. The crazy thing is, he has a guy on top on his front hood traveling at high speed.

Those that hardware their cam, do you recommend using, small, mini, standard or medium add a fuse kit? I am confused on which to use?

 

Can you turn off sound recording?

I would love a dashcam for video purposes, but what if I am singing taylor swift when i get in an accident? I can't have that sort of liability.

As mentioned above, mine is wired into the mirror and thus protected by that fuse. If you are going to wire all the way under the dash, a three-amp fuse should be about right depending on your wire size (which is dictated by the amount of juice the device that draws).

Most dashcams run 5 volts, not 12 and thus you need a step-down transformer and a fuse. There's lots of wiring kits that have the transformer and an appropriate inline fuse. Here's one:

I've not yet bought either of them, but the main attractor of the Thinkware is the seemingly lower profile camera; the body pretty much hugs the windshield rather than being a cylinder.

I'm waiting on the combination of receiving some $ I have coming plus having time available to do the install pretty soon after purchase.

Ignoring that: The better question is why wouldn't you speak up?

What's your threshold for saying something when you see someone doing something that risks others life and property while denying there's a problem? Do you wait until someone's hurt before you say anything? Or do you wait until someone dies?

I've had friends seriously injured due to inattentive/distracted drivers. One was in a coma for a week.

I will speak up when I see someone post a video of poor driving and then disclaim any wrongdoing.

(no, I'm no polly perfect either; I f' up sometimes. yet I own my mistakes and strive not to repeat them)

 

I have a Blackvue in my car and the wife has a Finevu in her truck. They both have dual cameras front and back in HD. For the Blackvue I had to buy a module that would kill the camera if the voltage got too low and I have had some issues with that working properly. Because of the motion detection parking mode if I leave the car while on vacation it will still kill the battery. The wife's Finevu has the monitor built in and works perfectly. Something to keep in mind if you get a model that has parking mode. They are both great systems and the pictures are awesome. You can check them out at www.blackboxmycar.com

 

Oh yes, undoubtedly showed his fault. As for me, cuts, bumps and a hurt shoulder, but remarkably fine. It also showed even driving on ice I attempted to avoid a 3/4 ton pickup careening to me without loosing a bit of control.

I edited the sound out when I sent it to the insurance companies and police.

Can you detail the wiring into the mirror?

 

Here's the mirror wiring. The pins just push into the negative and positive mirror connector. It was an easy task to run the wires in the windshield wire cover after I took the mirror off its bracket.

I soldered a decapitated mini-USB cable to the 5v side of the reducer and of course the mirror connector was soldered to its 12V side. The excess wiring was pushed up under the headliner.



The stepdown box is Velcroed to the headliner where it leans upwards and forward. Since I painted it black, it blends in fairly well.
