Whenever you watch an alaska off the grid show, lots of people live in these. They live off the grid, in small cabins like these. Then they pan outside, and all the crap they use to live off the grid, is spread out in a huge mess all over the front, taking up about 1/4 acre.

    ...we'll get there.
Thanks for sharing that link - i saw the PBS show, but will have to give this a read.

OP - if you're worried about potentially missing your stuff, would you consider storing it for a year? If you do a staged downsizing of your living arrangements, you can use some of those savings for a storage unit. If you don't use the stuff in the year, sell it/donate it/give it to friends. You'd be amazed what a 6-pack of beer will get you in terms of borrowed stuff when you need it. The benefit of giving things to friends is that you know where it is, and hopefully can use it if you need it occasionally. I don't mean to encourage mooching, or that other people will pick up the slack, but if someone already has what you need, there's little point in owning your own too, if you're willing to be a good and generous borrower.

Borrowed tools returned with a beer or two, a full tank of gas, and a sincere thank-you seem to always be available the next time they're needed.

I think part of the book being better is that your imagination is running wild! You're peering through the scope with him across Twin Lakes up the mountain side at the sheep...

I work with a guy who lives out of his truck. He makes 20 bucks an hour and has 2 gym memberships for working out and showering. Has a camper shell for sleeping. He said his divorce left him homeless and he kinda prefered it after a bit lol. Cellphone bill , car insurance and gas are his monthly bills.

Wouldn't. I understand downsizing but if I have to put a mattress in my bathtub, it's too small. Lol

its a Toyota truck and that's all the modifications needed
this is what I think, why not just buy a travel trailer/camper ? it already comes with the anemities you will need in it already, unless they cost more than a tiny home I would buy a travel trailer

Must be that. I remember getting the book thinking "no way can this be anywhere near as good as the show", was very pleasantly surprised 2 pages in. It grabs you.

I've actually thought about doing this for a year and saving $15k easy to put toward a downpayment on a home. I have a 24 Hour gym membership, company I work for has a huge open lot I could crash in nightly. SoCal weather never gets that bad. Starting to sound more and more doable lol.

welcome to the shaggin' wagon babe! :bananadance:

If the book is better than the documentary, that is saying something, so it's on my to-read-list. It amazes me he lived so long in solitude. I enjoy solitude at times, but that was really extreme.

Around here there are very strict night parking lots

Parts of this city 1-6am you can't street park

    Cops are very vigilant

Pasadena is like that but many cities in LA have streets with open parking all day/night. I know North Hollywood does, one of the side streets off of Lankershim near the gym. I left my old car parked there for a week once while I was on vacation. There are always motorhomes parked around that area for presumably the same reason.

But yeah some places like Pasadena have ordinances where you can't park on the street overnight, even if you are a resident. When I lived there I had to pay for a yearly parking permit just to park my car overnight while living in an apartment there. Anytime a friend wanted to crash we had to go to the police station to buy an overnight permit to put in their window.
