Sometimes it helps to go outside to verify. Also dogs coming inside covered with snow helps.

Tig is more versatile. Also better heat control working on someone's frame.

TIG is more easily versatile. And it does give more heat control. But for welding mild steel on a truck frame, MIG is good enough. And the heat can be controlled with MIG too.

Absolutely, I think most of the serious fab guys and shops are using MIG.

I'm just better at TIG than MIG, so I stick with what I can do.

I have never actually tried TIG. And my asshat brother has still not let me try his yet. But from watching vidoes and listening/reading, TIG is slow. I plan on upgrading to a bigger machine so I can crank the heat up more and increase my travel speed. My welding projects seem to take me way too long.

And definitely stick with what you are good at. If it works for you, it is all good

What machine do you have now?

I need more room for a fab shop before I buy a welder, sadly.

I have a 20+ year old Lincoln 110v unit. Does real well on lighter gauge stuff. But for the amount of welding I have been doing in the past 6 months, I would like to be able to burn shit in fatser and save some time.
I need more space myself also. A garage can only serve so many different tasks before shit goes bad. And sawdust tucked into nooks and crannies can be an issue when grinding sparks find them.

The only real Down Side to the Tig Process is prep work

It is not bad with new material .

I can only think your prep time would be about a hour for 5 minutes of weld could even be longer

Easy to find out just what process is better do a tensile and bend test on a old frame section

You pay for the lab time, I'll do the welding :)

Prep is always an issue with welding to a truck frame, MIG is a bit less sensitive though.
