I think the rivnut and well nut are pretty much the same thing, but the well nut looks to have a plastic or rubber coating on it.

    Rivnut:

    Well nut:

But I'm guessing it's the same basic concept

I want to get a roof rack, but am hesitant in drilling holes.
@KiteGuam Thanks for posting the rivnuts & wellnuts. If I get those & silicon, I won't be scared.

Yeah they're basically nuts that expand in the holes that you drill to both hold the rack in place and create a seal against water. I recommend putting a bead of silicone around the top as well when you insert them into the holes as an extra precaution. The reason I recommend putting a gasket down is so that water doesn't get trapped under the mounts, between the mounts and the roof. If it does and it just sits there for awhile, it could end up being bad news down the road.

Also, don't overtighten well nuts. Once you feel resistance from them using a wrench they are tight...if you keep going they will crack and lose effectiveness. I had that happen to one of mine (the last one of course), so one of these days I need to remove the rack and place news ones in.

I believe they should have a torque spec. The 1/2" one's that come with the BDS lifts are 90 ft lb's

Sorry these were the only two I had that had an okay view of it. The QTowers are no drill and are rock solid once you get them dialed in. Took maybe an hour to get everything set up. They have nice thick silicone feet to help prevent any scratching or moisture pooling. Just make sure the spot is clean and dry before clamping down and you should be g2g.

My only gripe is that they sit a tad high, but I have gotten over that.
