Had my first flicker on the feeder this summer a couple of times but never did a picture of it, jealous!

Dang that is one dirty window I don't see anything? Or snow storm :D

Got out on the river last weekend Pelicans are starting to school up for the run South.

Stitched together 12 pics for a Panorama using Microsoft ICE. Works well but took almost an hour to auto align. Good excuse to upgrade the laptop I guess. Zooming in you can still see the detail so I'm happy with the program.

And I must've brought one back with me because I just saw a Palm Warbler in San Diego today...very strange to photograph! We were trying to figure it out for a little while but it's the only thing it could possibly be. I'll have to get the photo up when I download it.

Great pictures Kevin and thanks for sharing! Any warbler or kinglet is a win in my book, well done. I will add loons into that group even if they are larger they seem to like being a long ways from people.

Just got word back on my band report from the herring gull T47:

[IMG]Herring Gull by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

It hatched in 2007 or earlier and was banded in 2010 on Appledore Island, Maine, only 6 miles off the coast of where I photographed it. That sort of information is the best part about band reporting. Science! :D

Maybe some of you could help me out with what these are - not much of a photographer, definitely not a birder, but I can learn!

This guy (or girl) and his / her mate were not pleased when I hiked near their territory. Made a huge racket and semi-dive-bombed me. That was up at Rocky Peak in Simi Valley.

welcome @Dalandser ! i'm thinking that first pic might be a peregrine falcon - which would be a pretty cool sighting!

My thought also. The background is perfect peregrine nesting habit, and they will fly at you if you get too close. They are extremely rare around here and I think most places, this one dive bombed me when I got too close to the nest on a rock face.

Wouldn't say I'm a birder or a very good wildlife photographer (opportunity never is on my side) but here's a couple I've managed to get.

I would guess it's a Northern Pygmy Owl, not positive. One of these experts will be along any time now.

Did a birding walk with my parents this weekend and realized I haven't looked in here in a while! Glad it's going strong three years later. :woot:

    Let's see...
Agree on the Peregrine. Cool sighting!

Probably immature Double-crested Cormorant, but I don't know my immature cormorants too well...

    House Finch

Ruddy Turnstone - Cool birds, their beaks are specially adapted for flipping over pebbles to forage for food. Hence the name!

That last one's tough. I think it might actually be a Yellow-rumped Warbler. It's weird that it was so far south in the summer, usually they winter down here and breed up in northern california and farther north. But according to the birds of north america maps, they have some year-round populations in the so-cal mountains. Huh! Very weird molting colors on it, too.

    Good stuff!

As for my weekend, we went out looking for Ridgway's Rails out at San Elijo Lagoon in Encinitas. Found two, but didn't get photos. They flew so quickly and then were instantly hidden!

Saw some good stuff, though. Lots of ducks and one white pelican. :p

Lots of these coastal sparrows around

[IMG]Selasphorus sp. by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

Right underneath that hummingbird we heard some weird croaky chirps, and were on the hunt! Got glimpses here and there, but it was really tough to see through the reeds...even tougher to photograph well.

Who, me? It was a Sora! First for me, so that was pretty cool.

All pairing up. Saw a couple hundred wigeon, about 15 each of Gadwall and Mallard, and maybe 30-40 Pintail.

It was a good day with some good birds! All in all we saw around 45 species.

Glad to see you still around Kevin! I thought of you a couple weeks ago and almost posted here. Christmas day saw about 20 robins here. Never seen robins in Dec. and yes it was cold and snowy. No idea why, strange one. They hung out in the ravine near the house for a little bit and then disappeared.

Huh, late migrants? It was a milder start to the winter for you, wasn't it? It definitely was here. Had 90 degree weather in late October!
