What kind of gas do you put in your 3rd gen? I know the dealer recommends regular (85-87)
I personally run 91.. just feel like I get a little more power and better gas mileage, could just be my imagination though. Just curious what everyone is running, and what peoples opinions are on the different octanes.

Also where I live we have 85,87,91 some of you guys might have 87,89,93 so I'll just put all 5 options in the poll.

You get zero gain from putting higher octane gas in your vehicle unless your vehicle requires higher octane gas. Maybe if your higher octane gas is ethanol free it may help quiet the high pressure fuel pump but that is it.

Imagination, except the little extra performance that comes from toting around a lighter wallet.

Your vehicle will make the most power on the lowest octane it is designed to run on.
Some 91 and up have different agents added in but it's not really anything to make a difference. It's all market hype.
Maybe if you had forced induction and a dyno tune then you would benefit from the 91 and 93.

All your ecm is going to do is pull timing and change variables to compensate for the higher octane to make it run the same as the 87 pretty well.

    Save your money

Jesus Christ, this whole post is absolutely wrong, with the bolded being exceptionally asinine.

I have a flux capacitor and a Mr. Fusion setup. I don't need gas or roads where I'm going.

Sorry should have explained better. What I meant is from my understanding is that higher octane rated fuels are designed to resist knocking and detonation than the lower octane. On higher compression engines supreme would be the choice.

If the Tacoma map is designed to run on 87 then in reality there shouldn't be any detonation. If there is then the knock sensor should do its job and save it from detonating. That's what I meant more so when I said the Ecm will adjust.
Plus I do believe that most auto makers have very conservative tunes from factory.

Who cares what some guy at your dealer said? (You shouldn't 'cause he's not going to admit sending you down a path that is contrary to what Toyota says).

Read page 570 in your manual. There's probably a tiny-little reason that the guys that developed this engine came up with the minimum octane rating.

In my 5.0L F150 putting the 91 in it paid the difference in price by getting better economy. Up here most 91 is ethanol free but up to 10% in 87 so the difference in my economy was probably due to the ethanol.
I tried the same thing with the Taco to see if it would make a difference, but economy stayed the same. So I just use 87.
