I just started watching the first series of this for the third time. Wow. Clay said in Episode 2, I think, to start your journey and to get out there. Well I'm ready. I have a 4x4 pro sport. A little knowledge (I know a little is dangerous) But how you gain more? I want to get out there & rediscover (or discover them for me) parts of America. Where would I start? Where would anyone start?

Get a buddy with a 2nd truck in case of catastrophic failure or getting terribly stuck, fill them with gas, download an offroad GPS map app (GAIA for example), drive places on the map that look cool.

There are lots of threads around with lists of things to bring if you're interested in recommendations for recovery and safety gear.

Expedition portal has lots of write ups of really cool long trips, plus you can ask the guy questions about it. Good way to discover ideas and routes you didn't know existed.

But if you're getting into it I'd definitely suggest lots of short trips. Days spent exploring and then weekend trips near home. As your trips get longer you will slowly refine your gear and learn more about dealing with vehicle problems which will come in handy when you're in the middle of absolutely nowhere.

Do you have a local 4x4 club? they might be able to tell you some good spots to check out

Started watching this weekend. I like how they don't get overly technical about the equipment and turn it into a garage show full of sponsors.

On a side note I like to use backcountry navigator to download topo maps when I explore my area.
