Did the 4.30's help with 285's?

I still have the stock 3.90's. 4.30's aren't worth the extra $1k plus in my opinion. I'll wait for something lower.

Gearing is the best option to get the power and some of the mpg back.

The larger tires actual don't significantly affect engine rpm.

    At 70mph with .58 overdrive:

    Stock tires, 1748rpm
    Larger 285-75-16, 1625rpm

The problem is you have dramatically increased the load on the engine to maintain that 70mph. Most people are running E rated tires which can add as much as 20lbs of rotational mass to each tire. Then you add wider mud terrains which both add rolling resistance. Top that off with a lift, take off the front spoiler and now you have increased drag. Not to mention the v-6 which doesn't have much bottom end power.

Gearing will help to reduce engine load, and put the engine in a more usable power band.

Anyone that says larger tires lower rpm therefor you'll get better mpg, is full of shit. 37"s on my cummins cost me 4.5mpg and added 11% engine load at 70mph. And that's not the only vehicle I've added larger tires to.

I'd like to see some 4.56 or 4.88's. Does anyone know what's different about the 16's diff?

Just got off the phone with Steven at ECGS.....he said that the front diffs are the same but the REAR diffs are different. They currently have nothing available for any of the 3 different 3rd gen rear diffs yet. He said that they did have one guy that sent in his "blown up" 3rd gen rear 3rd member and they were able to put things together to get it working, but as far as actual production of specific gears.....nothing yet but it is in the works.

This is from a google search from a Four Wheel Magazine review:

"Tacoma trucks will be fitted with one of two rear drum-braked axles depending on configuration. The BD20 axle has an 8-inch ring gear and we’re told this axle is basically carryover from the previous truck, but it does have some changes including a new gearset. There’s also a brand-new rear axle with 8.75-inch ring gear and high-strength axletubes. The BD22A is the “normal” 8.75-inch axle and the BD22AN 8.75-inch axle is fitted with an electric rear locker. The BD22AN will be included in TRD Off-Road package-equipped trucks. These new 8.75-inch axles contribute to a gross axle weight rating improvement of 24 percent. It’s also worth noting that the electronic rear diff locker now has an internally-mounted drive motor as opposed to the external motor found on the previous Tacoma. Up front, the centersection and axleshafts are carryover from the previous-gen truck. All of the hubs are stronger and of a new design due to new wheel slippage sensors."

I have a 2013 manual transmission with a 6" lift and 35s. My gears right now are 3.58. I am thinking about changing the gears to 5.29. Has anyone had experience good or bad with 5.29? If this isn't the right place to ask can you point me in the right direction.......
