I have AAA and ToyoCare as well but I'm not going to rely on them for more expeditionary adventures. A jumpstart kit seems like a pretty inexpensive assurance that can affect more than just my pickup.

I bought the Winplus from Costco, then one night I needed it. It was 100% charged when I tried to use it on my low car battery. Have to say that it gave me one good crank, but died quickly after that and did not start my car. Had to get help with jumper cables and that did it.
I returned it. My opinion, good idea...but doesn't really work. You need more than one good crank to start an engine with a dead battery.

Does it have a boost button? I think almost all of them have one. It should have given you several dozen cranks on a full battery.

I bought an Antigravity Micro-Start XP-10 back in March and it's worked pretty well. Haven't had to use it on the Taco yet but did use it to jump a 97 Dodge Dakota with the 5.2 V8 without the battery even hooked up. Only complaint is the ends are tiny and cheaply made.

Even for normal on-road situations I don't really feel like waiting for AAA for an hour or more for something I can fix in 2-5 minutes. (My mom once waited over 2 hours on AAA in a Walmart parking lot to get a jump-start). AAA/Toyotacare is for situations I can't fix quickly.

    This.
Plus, if someone around me needs a jump, Toyotacare isn't going to be willing to foot the bill for them, while the jump pack will happily start their vehicle.

And, I just know that the one time I need a jump, my phone will be dead. Murphy is a giant dick like that

I have the battery tender portable power pack. You can leave it plugged in all the time and can jump a battery that has no polarity, had to do it once and it worked no problem. Also has a USB port for charging phones, works great when camping rather than leaving the engine running just to charge a phone. Bought mine at home depot, was cheaper than Amazon at the time, not sure about now. https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tender-Lithium-Portable-030-0001-WH/dp/B00Q2E2QF0

Why would my battery die 100 miles into the woods?

Same reasons it may die anywhere else. User error, faulty battery, aged battery, etc. Sometimes it happens with no warning at all on a battery that should have tons of life left.

A couple years ago we had a failed battery in my wife's RAV4 late after dinner out on a Friday evening. Called up Toyota Care and it was going to be a couple hours before a truck could get there. We said f' that mess. We grabbed the jumper cables from under the seat and got help from another couple, just as we've helped out others in turn.

I have cables in every car we own. I would never call Toyota Care before jumping the vehicle if there were others around. Why would anyone do that?
