Will the double cab work for what I need as well as the Access cab?

Not many 2nd gen. tacos here in Boise, at least not with the features I want: 4WD, Access Cab, V6, SR5 package. I plan to put a popup type slide in truck camper (weighs about 1000 lbs) and it needs the 6 foot bed. There are a few double cabs with long bed around, but how will the increased wheelbase (13 inches) and slightly reduced payload(120 lbs) affect the handling with the camper? I will not be going off road, but will spend a lot of time in the desert Southwest exploring and camping on BLM roads, some of which can be a bit rough and also there are a lot of short spur roads into nice camp spots that have a high berm and/or deep ruts. But I wont be slam banging the thing around -I drive very slow on rough roads. So I am not looking for the offroad package. I may need to beef up the springs, but the camper dealer guy I talked to said the Tacoma can handle the camper without modification. He suggested putting the camper on and see how it handles, then modify if I don't like the ride/handling. but the main thing is the access vs double cab.

Lots of guys with epic DCLB builds. Also your camper guy is full of nonsense, you'll need to completely redo the rear suspension to accommodate 1000 lbs of constant load in a Tacoma.

Your handling will be terrible and you'll be completely bottomed out before you even add any extra weight to the camper, and you'll likely blow your rear shocks in doing so.

Agreed, 1000lbs is a heavy constant load. Having owned both; just in regards to size and carrying stuff - my DCLB is so much more enjoyable than my access was. After owning the DC I don't think I could go back.

The payload on my truck is 1200 lbs. If I put a 1000 lb camper on it I'd be overloaded driving it with nothing else in the truck or camper. You need a pull behind for this.
