Bell housing is different on a 2.7 than a 3.4. Gear ratios are also different.

Pretty much. Some googling will bring up some old pirate 4x4 or TTORA threads where they discuss it. Didn't sound too promising.

Could take what he is offering and trade it for what you need from somebody looking for a 2.7 tranny/T-case.

Edit. I think the T case might be the same for both so you could use that

Anything is possible with a ton of fabrication and modification.

But to save yourself time and money, you should just get the right assemblies.

They are pretty reliable. I'm not sure you would have to be concerned about it.

I did the reverse - tranny/xfercase out of a 3.4L and using my existing bellhousing and torque converter. Automatic A340 transmission.

Having the tranny/xfercase out of a 2.7 would have been a huge plus. I thought there was a TW member in another 4x conversion thread looking for 2.7 parts for a conversion...

Hey you might want to read into this thread, he did the same conversion as you and he didn't run into any problems like you did.

OH, that makes a lot more sense now. Is there is a reason it's more difficult? If you got a tranny with the 4WD options and auto why wouldn't it be also bolt in/bolt out?

There is a lot of interchangeability between this generation of tacomas. Given enough time/desire/money one can make anything work. As I discovered, while 95% of the work would be bolt in/bolt out, the remaining 5% of work can frustrate a weekend wrencher. Thankfully, there's a growing work of knowledge available on the internet. When I finished mine, only one other pre-runner conversion existed in SoCal, and maybe only a handful across the US. (To my knowledge and being discussed on the internet - TTORA - If not for TTORA, I would still be driving a PreRunner and not know any better)
