i have a 2012 Tacoma trd sport I bought a few months ago and it only came with one key and remote. Looking for advice on buying a new key and remote and having it cut and programmed. Anyone purchase one online and program themselves or does the dealer or locksmith need to do it?

I had success with (2) different Toyotas from http://www.keyfobmall.com/ I used these guys as several searches & reviews pointed back to them.

They had some good tips on how to tell (or increase your chances) that your current key is acceptable for a locksmith / dealer to work from. Once you search for your make/model/year, click on some of the images for those tips.

I used a locksmith for both my keys. They asked some clarifying questions of both my current working key and the blank key to make sure it was even worth doing (still no guarantees). These were the same questions that the keyfobmall.com website gave as tips.

Thanks guys for the advice. Just trying to really avoid the dealer. Keys are far from cheap.

yes indeed they are expensive, it was like $160.00 to have two keys cut and programed for my 07 Sport, I had the locksmith do it. It took him about 45 minutes.

I purchased both fob and key from Amazon for like $ 7-15.
I programmed the key fob myself by digging up info on tw, but took the key to a locksmith for programming for $110.
Felt kinda dumb because it only took him a few mins and I don't believe he used any special tools- probably could have saved some money by trynna program myself but didn't dig to deep.
Also lookout whether or not your key has a g stamped on it for transponder

Thanks guys that is definetly some helpful advice. I've programmed keys before by inserting them into the ignition and following some steps was just unsure how difficult it may be.

It definitely requires a certain software to program a key. It's not just a procedure you do by closing the doors and pushing buttons. The snap-on solus tool can program keys, but I think it requires you to have the master key.
