That's a loaded question. Can you afford a new engine cash or would you have to finance. Because the new motor could be pulled from salvage but odds are it may need some parts. And then you figure if one goes you might have more issues down the line with your current engine even if you replaced the one valve. Up to you entirely.

    My .02 cents.
Are you able to do your own work? Does the engine run at all? If yes than I suggest first checking the oil pressure. HF has a decent oil pressure gauge. If oil pressure ok then check compression of all the other cylinders. If compression in in spec. then pull the cylinder head. If all the bores have no scoring and still show the cross hatch from the factory hone than buy a rebuilt head. I just spent about $800 on a rebuilt cylinder head from CHI and OEM gaskets for 3.4L V6.
If the oil pressure is too low or the cylinder bores are bad than roll the dice on a used motor. Hopefully will be better than what you have.
Or you could really get in debt and get a new crate motor from Toyota for ONLY $14700...just kidding.

As long as the engine wasn't knocking or consuming oil before the bad valve.......A valve job will be just fine. It will get you back on the road. Take the head off and take it to a reputable engine machine shop. Buy a new MLS head gasket and put it all back together. Too many snake oil mechanics out there.

Did the mech do a compression test, or use a vacuum gauge to get his information? A dying fuel injector on #4 acts like that...
