I changed my spark plugs today and noticed the drivers side closest to the radiator spark plug had some oil above the threads. Did some looking and it could possibly be caused by a valve gasket leaking. Anyone have any experience with this? Any write ups on this? Are there any other possibilities that would cause this?

By the way it's a 4.0l with about 170k on it.

If it is above the threads it would also be above the seating surface wouldn't it? If it is like the image below yes it is a seal leaking around the spark plug well and you will have to pull the valve cover to replace it.

^Yep now there is a real leak but a couple of drops around a spark plug isn't.
