That's a nice set up, but my garage ceiling is so low I can't even drive inside with my cap on.

I like how organized your garage is and it must be nice to find things when you need them.

I remember when I bought my house I'd always wonder how people in my neighborhood could let their garages get so cluttered and messy. Now I have 2 kids and my garage is a fkn wreck. :annoyed:

    Too few to list.
Most people no longer opt for the rubber boot as over time it scratches the paint off the cab. You can get a window replacement but that would be an easy $200-300 right there. I say sell it then. Booted Snugtop's sells for less than $1k.

California classifies regular pickup trucks as commercial vehicles? And then they allow that to change if you put a shell on the bed? That makes no sense to me.

    See Pickup CVC §471:
    TYPES OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLES https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/pubs/reg_hdbk/ch13/ch13_1
Obviously our Tacomas are equivalent to the Nissan Frontier example. Weight fees are required.

Mounting of a shell (or tonneau) on the bed negates the "open box-type bed" description, so an auto plate can be issued (no weight fee).

Also, the registration classification doesn't change when the shell/tonneau is installed or removed by the owner. If it's without a shell (open box-type bed), it's registered as a commercial vehicle. If it has a shell, it can be registered as an auto or a multipurpose vehicle. The registered owner must declare one or the other and will be assigned auto or commercial plates accordingly. In my mind this is reinforced by the following statement in the "Multipurpose Vehicle" section: "Manufacturers produce variations of multipurpose vehicles that are actually pickups and are subject to commercial registration."

I could be wrong on some points... I've certainly been wrong before... but this is how I am understanding the CA DMV rules for registration of pickups. Not sure if any of this even helps the discussion :/

Keep it on ... personally think the long beds look better with either a rack system or a shell

I'm old. I had a tonneau and BackRack and switched to a shell. The shell is way handier, and looks better.

I am not sure the question should be how it looks but how does it function. For me, for the way I use my truck, the majority of the time, the shell is needed. I need the rack space though I have a cab rack, the Yakima on the shell is the better hauler, I need the security though true nothing stops a thief who really wants your/my stuff. I need the shell and my SnugtTop looks just as good on. Other cap, less so.

Looks good without, I don’t have one haul things on a frequent basis it’s be removed if I had a small single axle trailer I’d def be rocking one for simple dry/lockable storage out an about.
