If a fin breaks off inside the torque converter which is a common issue , it will usually remain inside the converter . Its going to create some metal to metal contact and cause additional wear ,but I doubt the fin or blade would ever route back into the transmission pan since the oil passages are too small for anything that big to pass through . Could be why the trans shop said your trans was fairly clean when you had the service performed . Chances are the trans may last years like this .

In the late 80's early 90's the trans in the V6 went to a lockup converter and some electronic controls the 4 cylinder still did not have a lockup but as time progressed they too ended up with a lockup converter. Man I haven't worked on those things in decades! As far as a broken turbine blade I would think it would change the stall characteristics yes?

Could this TSB apply to my 2001? It says 2002, but I just had the CEL come on, and it's a P0770.

It all depends on what symptoms you are feeling or what the transmission does or doesnt do .

You could use the TSB to help you diagnose the problem .
The most common problem is a faulty solenoid or the wiring going to the solenoid , dirty or contaminated fluid

Well the problem is, I have no symptoms. The truck will shift into O/D and as far as I can tell, the TCC is engaging properly. Cruise control is smooth, no abnormal surging or shifting. The CEL just randomly came on and thats the code it produced...

The only symptom I have that I think may be related, is that once in a blue moon (literally like once every few weeks), when in stop/go traffic the truck wants to stall as I stop/go. But it happens only rarely and at slow speeds and I've been having trouble diagnosing that problem (At first I thought it was a TPS problem but I scoped the TPS and it was functioning properly). However, it wasn't acting up when the code was set. But i think it may be related.

Thanks for the link... My last trans service was at 60k. I'm at 97k now so I know I'm overdue. I think the first thing I'll do is a full trans flush with a new filter. It needs it anyway, then I'll see if I have any problems after that. Thanks for your help it is much appreciated!

Hey Gearcruncher I was hoping to get some input from you about fluids... I recently dropped my trans pan, replaced the filter, and topped off the trans with 3 quarts of Toyota Dexron III ATF. I wanted to do a couple more drain/fills but I really don't want to spend $10/qt for the Toyota stuff. Will I hurt anything by using a cheaper brand? Say Oreiley's or Autozone Dexron III?

Another thing... When I did my trans pan/ filter the other day I found my drain plug had been cross threaded so I don't want to remove it. Short of dropping the pan again, can I just pop the ATF line off the radiator and run the truck at idle to pump out 2-3 quarts, then refill thru the dipstick tube?

Thank you for the read very helpful, Especially the General Troubleshooting on the A340F. I've had to argue with Toyota and a transmission shop for an hr to get what you have posted.

Could you clarify something for me on the A340F.
It says that its a 22re engine.
    I have a 2001 Tacoma with a 3400 v6. It says below the Vin # that is has a A340F.

Would all A340F's match up with one another if you were to change out, Bell housing, Transfer case?

    Thanks again...

The best guys to answer that are from wrecking yards . They answer these questions every day . Give the local wrecking yard a call .
To play it safe , go with same year and same motor and there will be no reason why it wont fit as long as its from a 4x4 identical to your truck

If I am understanding your question , you want to install a second hand transmission but want to confirm that it will work in your application before making the purchase . Call the wrecking yards !!! They know their stuff when it comes to second hand .
Now if you are talking about purchasing a 2 wheel drive transmission and trying to make it fit your 4x4 truck , good luck as the transmission would have to come completely apart to change out the rear output shaft . It can be done but will cost you a seal kit . If you are that deep into a transmission , might as well just rebuild what you have

I just purchased a new (to me) 2003 Tacoma V6 3.4L 4wd truck. It replaces the truck I totaled last month. The totaled truck was the exact same year make model. I've also owned a 99 V6 4wd but sold it long ago.

The transmission dip stick on this truck is not as long as on the other 2003 (same year, make, model, engine) or the '99 (same engine and also 4wd). Do you know if Toyota changed the dipstick in 2003 to a shorter version? Even all the used trucks I considered purchasing had longer one's (don't know all the years but some were at least 2003, maybe 2004).

I'm trying to figure out if the not-so-clever prior owner replaced his OE with an aftermarket and furthermore if the level reading on the dipstick is accurate to toyota spec. This dipsick doesn't say toyota anywhere but does have some kind of Asian writing on it. Could be chinese, could be japanese. Its shorter and easy to put back down the tube. Usually, I have to say a prayer, dance around the truck 3 times, and then jiggle the hell out of one to get it to slide past the bend (or pull it out and flip it around).

    Thanks.

Dear Gearcruncher I have several questions, I tow a 2,000 pound boat, trailer, motors, fuel with my SR5 3.4L 2002 4x4 with an automatic tranny. I always hit the O/D button to off as directed by the manual when towing. But, should I hit the ECT Power button to take a load off the tranny? FYI, I never use the ECT Power and really have never fully gained an understanding of it aside that it lengthened the shift of gears in the vehicle when under load? My last question is how long will a 4 speed automatic tranny last in an SR5 (2002 model) with 238K on it that has been serviced religiously (tranny fluids changed every 40K) at the dealership? Thank you for any response you can give.

Its best to tow with the ect button on as well as being in tow mode . More pressure and resistance to slipping this way . Consider a transmission temp gauge when towing . Do not wait for the high trans temp light to illuminate.
Heat is the biggest killer and you cant see how hot your transmission gets when towing unless you have a gauge .
It is impossible to guess at how long a transmission will last but it sure sounds like the transmission was serviced properly which should assist with the longevity of the trans.

Companies who rebuild torque converters will tell you the hundreds of times their converters are unjustly blamed for a problem. Anything from a no move condition to TCC shudder or slip. Not that there couldn’t be a converter problem like the wrong lining was used. But many times a closer look other than a converter is required.
