I’ve started looking into winches for my 2001 Tacoma. I intend to use a custom front tow hitch modified to fit the winch behind the stock bumper, and cut a hole in the the bumper for the fairlead.

Since my truck is mostly a daily, and the winch is for for bad snow weather almost exclusively, I’ve been of course considering the lower weight and easier to deal with synthetic ropes. However, in doing my research I’ve noticed the weight savings between steel cable and synthetic rope is only like 15 - 20 pounds on average. I’m not sure that’s really worth the price difference. Am I right? Is this really the only weight savings?

I’ll already be saving around 50lbs by using a simple custom hitch instead of a big and heavy offroad bumper. I haven’t chosen a winch yet, but I’ll also likely go for the smallest unit that will still do the job with some headroom. I’m not sure it’s worth the tiny weight savings of synthetic rope based on all my other weight savings.

    Any feedback will be welcome.

There is the weight savings and synthetic is a little less deadly in the event of a F up.
