OK, you guys might have survived the cut. I did manage to reach over the tire and touched the cable and the receptacle for the hooked end of the rod. It has that damned chrome thing on it. I WILL get it off.
Don't worry about the chest pains.....I was just kidding (maybe).

SUCCESS! The spare tire is on the ground. Unfortunately, in the process of getting the "lock" off, I busted the receptacle. I can find a replacement but in the meantime the tire will travel in the bed. Pretty good for an Old Fart...huh?

The tire is a Bridgestone. Could it be the original spare? If so, it would be unsafe as a 14 year old tire.

Not as a spare, but if you are gonna run it for ever, not smart.

I still have my original white letter Bridgestone spare. I use it only to get to the repair shop and home. No real trips on it.
    I trust it for that.

    Congrats, I guess?

There's a date code on the sidewall by the bead.

It will tell you the week/year it was manufactured. Anything over 10 years old is very sketchy for regular use.

The nice thing about a spare on a pickup is it is hidden from the sun's rays the entire time (unless you spend a fair amount of time upside down), and it's probably rarely, if ever, gotten used. Even if it's cracked, it would still likely get you to the tire shop, but if you see cracks, just replace it.

I still have my oem spare, that reminds me, I should check its pressure...

Looks like mine is a 14 year old tire. I think I will paint it white and make a flower planter out of it. Would be cool as a headstone replacement. Cheap too.
