Added a US Off Road bumper and M8000s winch to my Tacoma late in the summer. Just haven't had the opportunity to break in the winch doing anything other than goofing off with it in parking lots. The pulleys, shackles, all went unused. Opportunity arose tonight.

Have to say that I'm thoroughly impressed with the winch and bumper. Probably will never see that kind of load again. Go big or go home, right?

Situation: LMTV is stuck in the mud, axles deep. Calls in a Unimog for assistance. Owner of Unimog is a coworker of mine and taps me to go check out the rescue, and maybe use me if all hell breaks loose.

    Let's go!

Attempt #1: Straight pull with Unimog
Result: Unimog digs in and almost gets himself stuck.

Attempt #2: Angled pull using winch with two pulley setup between Unimog and LMTV.
Result: Tacoma pulls Unimog sideways. LMTV doesn't move.

Attempt #3: Straight pull with Tacoma winch. Two pulley setup (3x mechanical advantage). Unimog strapped to back of Tacoma for anchor.
Result: Rescued LMTV and a 12 pack of beer for this kid!

Great story, glad you got to put your winch to use. Now I want a winch even more!

What is your guess on the total force on the bumper? I know you said 3x advantage and you have a 8k winch but in assuming you didn't need it all to get him out. If so, I'm pretty impressed everything stayed together with 24k pounds in it.

The LMTV weighs in at about 18,000 lbs. Add in whatever was in the truck and the additional force it required to get him out of there. Honestly, we were at the limits of the winch.

The combined weight of the Unimog and Tacoma (19,000 lbs.) slid just a little bit.

Jeep had a problem with the winch and line. A second Jeep showed up at the end but we had already gotten the LMTV loose.
