Thanks for the input, I'll have to check it out.
I'm definitely in no rush to make a purchase, I might wait a whole year.

If the price is right, I'll definitely consider it.

Edit: looks like the access cab 2017 doesn't come in a manual transmission.

AC manual is available in Sport trim.

    Interesting.
I did test drive an ac sport manual a week or two ago. It felt really nice.
I guess I will have to price everything out.

If I can get the sport for the cost difference of a rear locker and whatnot, I may go that route and upgrade the truck as I go.

But only if the price was right.
If the sr5 was at a low enough price with the ac and manual that would be a no brainer to upgrade.

    Wow, that's really good.

What elevation are you driving at if you mind me asking?

My second gen was a complete gas hog everywhere from sea level to 10,000ft.

I have the sport, love it, also go "off roading" meaning dirt roads/mud/dirt roads with snow/beach, and some testy shiat for my stock wheels and suspension. I plan on a lift/wheels/and whatever else I need to keep doing it. Like the sunroof :) scoop, even if it doesn't do shiat! Down the road I will put some lights in there, also have the LB and that is awesome coming off a SB. I drove a 2001 OR for 15 years and I also loved that. That truck was a little better on the rough trails. I'm sure with a new suspension the sport with feel better. I'm not a rock crawler and have not added pin striping to the truck yet, don't plan on it:) But I love taking it off road and it does fine.

Im in NJ, think we are pretty close to sea level. And only 2 options for the manual, AC Sport or DCSB OR.

    Truck stuff
With my 3.5l on stock tires I was around 18 mpg traveling 70-80 mph when I took a trip to CO. With slightly heavier wheel tire setup going through Texas I dropped to 15 mpg doing 80 mph under 1000 ft elevation.

I thought it still had ATrac but couldn't say for sure about anything besides CC. I didn't want to state incorrect info.

    ...stuff
I have an SR5 4x4. I get 22-23 mpg and it goes everywhere. I have had lockers in the past, but never used them. All of the TRD OR features are neat, but when I know I am going to switch out the suspension and wheels/tires, and really don't see a need for crawl, why spend the extra money for things I do not need? I do like the headlights and black fenders, but its not worth the price jump. I can add those in later. Just my 2 cents.

Looks like the TRD off road with a double cab and manual transmission is 33,725$
The trd sport access cab manual is 33,040$
    Sport double cab is 33,725$

    o_O

That's an expensive hood scoop

Call this guy the best car sales experience I have ever had. I am in Texas and bought my car from him in Columbus Ohio.....no one in Houston could touch his $3k off MSRP:

    Dean Mahalati

    Toyota West
    Columbus OH
    New\Used Car Sales Professional
    Toyota West
    614-204-1106 (direct)
    614-870-8200 ext.4870

He is a Toyota Truck Master. He sells over 250+ trucks per year
In addition when I told him about the transmission typically being low on fluid he had it checked and it was low by 1 1/2 qrts., had it ready to go when I flew up there to pick it up.

My exact truck and pricing I bought from him:
    2016 Tacoma TRD Off-Road

    Columbus, Ohio, 43085

    4x4, 3.5L V6 Engine, 6-Speed Automatic

    Double Cab, 5-ft. Short Bed

    $38,494

    Total Price (MSRP)

    Starting Price

    $33,730

    Exterior Color

    Magnetic Grey Metallic

    $0

    Interior Color

Black Fabric with Orange Accent Stitching

    $0

    Packages

'Premium & Technology Package with JBL Audio with Options'

    $3,685

    Accessories

All-Weather Floor Liners and Door Sill Protectors14$179

    Delivery, Processing & Handling Fee

    $900

    Total Price (MSRP)

    $38,494

    $38,494 - $3,000 = $35,494 + 382.50 dealer fee = $35,876.50

Every dealership in Houston and surrounding area was minimum $2,500+ Over MSRP.

That's average price in my area, New England, prices are around $1,000 below dealers invoice. Biggest difference I see is the dealer fee. Mine was only $95

Ya I too love the OR black fenders, and the black front valance. As soon as I got it home, first I washed & Clayed it, then I dipped the fender flares/front valance. Figured for under $20 why not see what it looks like, and I can easily remove it if I don't like it. Or I could get them permanently painted sometime in the future.

Right now I'll leave them dipped and see how it holds up. Did some dip on two of my other vehicles, three years ago, and it still looks great.

Came out really nice, did the badges as well. One of the easiest DIYs! It's not to everyone's liking, but it's not their truck, so for me it working out great so far.

Did swap out the tires as soon as it came off the carrier/dealer installed. So I don't know what the MPGs would be with the stock wheels, but I'm averaging 18.5 with my K02s.

Off road, rear locker and crawl I. Auto trans. (I have heard something about the brakes as well). Also suspension is supposed to be more geared to off roading, although many on here change it out.

Sport, suspension better for road, 17 inch rims, and the hood with built in scoop. From air dam. I have a manual sport and love to drive it. I think for reading what you have posted in this thread, sport would be fine.

The tow package from the factory is a must in my opinion.

The headlights you can't because your truck isn't wired for the led relay. Trd also gives you the smart key system, the interior finish is a bit nicer on the door panels and dash, leather shift knob, 7 inch entune premium, power sliding rear window, etc. rear locker is gonna run you $800+ to install yourself or somewhere else. So it ends up almost being worth the price jump to just get the trd. Ive had both my 16 was an sr5 my 17 is a trd or and I wish I had gone this route the first time. I do agreee though if your gonna gut the suspension, etc and don't care about the creature comforts than save $2-3000 and get the sr5

    Hahaha. Troof.

I got the MT OR because I live in PA. On a mountain. Where it snows enough that a locker can really be handy. And many of our paved roads could be confused with rocky terrain so softer suspension keeps my tender backside happy. And the fake scoop is not only silly, it's irritating to look at from behind the wheel. But you are correct. I never drive single file along a trail at 3 mph while people who say "dude" a lot video tape the slow motion wagon train of Yeti cooler owners scraping things ... mostly because I can walk faster than that and dirt bikes exist :)

Exact same just different fabric in the 2nd gen that was the case but not the 3rd. My 16 sr5 seats were exactly the same as my 17 OR besides fabric.
