He may get better. Based on his mpgs I wonder if he's going into closed loop. These gears will help get that weight moving and with a little higher highway rpms may help get t closed loop.

Now this chart is for a 1:1 gear ratio, isn't it? It's the only way to compare apples to apples. So, in OD the rpms will the lower.

THey were awesome tires. Completely under rated on this board. They were Maxxis Bighorns 762s. @EODwick bought them from me when I made the switch to 37s in case you didn't catch that. That was my second set. I had Coopers before that and they didn't last very well. I did no trimming or CMC to fit them and had 0 lift for most of the time I had them

Toyos supposedly run a tiny bit taller, but they cost considerably more

That can't do a chart with OD because final drive ratios are different. You can only compare at 1:1 (converter locked) which is probably 4th for you. Not that familiar with 6 lug ATs.

Front locker = snapped CV axles. Ask me how I know.

Pfft, a bunch of us made it. Wasn't bad.

As for gears, I had 4.88 and 35's on my 07 when I had it, and the Speedo was almost dead on.

For 33's I would probably do 4.56 or possibly 4.10 depending on driving habits.

The vehicle runs on a set of constant parameters when it is warming up, accelerating, or under a load like hauling and towing. That's open loop. It is ignoring feedback from the sensors to optimize the fuel to air ratio. When shifted out, under normal load, it goes to closed loop where it uses sensor data to optimize. That's one reason towing mileage sucks so bad. It's not just the weight.

I believe the autos have a .81-1 OD and the manual .849-1 if I remember correctly. Which is why I say the auto with 4.88s in equivilent to the 6-speed with 4.56s

I know open/loop vs closed loop. Wasn't sure how you thought gears/tires affected that.

I haven't seen that many snap. In fact I've seen none on the second gen first hand. I carry a spare or two but If you're careful about when you engage and disengage it I think it makes you LESS prone to breakage.

Think about it this way, for a given trail, the less stress you put on the truck (IE easier you make it) the less prone you are to breakage. THe problem comes when you start doing more and more difficult trails because of those mods.

IFS Tacomas are trail riders not rock crawlers. I don't give a fuck what anyone says. The drivetrain isn't up to the stress of full bore crawling.

@JimboAnz If you want the "Never have to worry about this shit again" solution I'll forward you the quote i got from ECGS about a custom 9.5" rear in a Tuff Stuff housing. Or I'll share with you what I've found about doing a 14bolt rear conversion. I'll probably be doing one or the other in the not TOO distant future.

Just be glad you dont have two project trucks
